Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo will soon go OTT. The title itself suggests that the series is going to be as quirky as it gets. Plus, it’s led by none other than Homi Adajania, who has spawned twisted stories like Cocktail, Finding Fanny, and more. The OTT series released on Disney+Hotstar stars Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Naseeruddin Shah and many more. In a tête-à-tête with BollywoodLife, Homi Adajania got candid about the series, casting and more. Excerpts from the interview here:
Tell us a little more about Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo…
What happened with the trailer is that a lot of people are just talking about action. It’s sad that we talk about it that way but it’s because women are doing what we usually see men doing and I don’t see any reason why it isn’t just equal, but that’s the way the world is now and it will continue to be. change slowly. Hopefully we should have gender parity soon, but the fact is everyone’s eyes are on the raw action. It’s a fun move. They are fearless women and it will be quite cruel if you cross their path the wrong way. But apart from that, there is much more. It has a lot to do with the human situation. You know, when you’re faced with the whole concept of gaining power and politics that people play and the manipulation between, within a family, so that’s what it’s all about. But that’s what it’s all about, but on steroids.
Where do such quirky ideas come from?
The ideas come very organically and instinctively. I don’t overthink them, so you’ll have to blame my genes for that. I’ll talk to my mom about it. But I grew up with very powerful women around me and I was never taught that a man or a woman is treated differently. It’s something I find really hard for me to wrap around. How we men have done this power play throughout history in order to control one of their own species. I just don’t feel like it. It’s bizarre. So for me, when I talk about powerful women, a family where the women run something like that, it’s not like I’m like, oh, let me come up with a new idea. To me it’s very organic that the women run it and the men went to work because that’s what the stereotype is. They live abroad and work abroad and send money home, thinking that ‘oh these poor women have such a boring existence and run a small cottage industry’, not knowing that they run the biggest cartel, to this side of the world and they have the most exciting lives.
How did Dimple Kapadia get on board?
“Do you think I had a choice or not?” Jokes apart, no no, she’s just a good friend, powerhouse of talent and fantastic actor. I’m not saying this out of any bias, but this is one of her best performances to date in her filmography. That’s kind of hard to say. Aside from that, I think she’s someone I worked with initially as a coincidence, then it became a habit and now if you ask me to make a movie with Dimple in it, it will be incomplete. She is an absolute joy to have on sets. We both share this strong desire to just spread good energy and have fun. So we work well together.
Reasons to watch Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo
I find it to be high octane entertainment. It’s the most masala outing I’ve ever had. It really has everything in it and the pacing of the story never gives you a chance to sit down and say, ‘Okay, what’s going to happen.’ It’s always three steps ahead and it has this nice galloping tampo in the story. For the audience it becomes a joyride in terms of entertainment, it is a wild rollercoaster ride. It’s not for the faint hearted. Anyone cool enough to jump on a rollercoaster like that should just hop on and go for it.
