How James Mangold can bring something fresh and memorable to the franchise

The Indiana Jones franchise went on hiatus after the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, which, although panned by many, was a financial success. Now, almost 15 years later, a fifth Indiana Jones film is slated for release in 2023, aided by Logan and Ford vs Ferrari director James Mangold. Fans of the classic adventure series are excited to see if this new installment can breathe new life into the franchise in a way that demystifies the polarizing, alien-filled Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t. As CinemaBlend discusses, here’s a clear shot at succeeding where the last film in the series failed.

Not much is known about the shape of the plot of Indiana Jones 5 will last, but producer Frank Marshall says fans will be “very happy” with the sequel. The fifth entry aims to include everything everyone wants from a Indiana Jones movie — quite a task for a series with such passionate fans. While we wait for more information on the film, there’s been a lot of speculation about how the director plans to revive the franchise. So let’s talk about some of the ways James Mangold can bring something fresh and memorable to the Indiana Jones universe in 2023.

Exploring an Aging Hero

Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford turned 80 this year and it looks like he can no longer play the agile young adventurer he once did. While there are plans to use aging technology on Ford in Indiana Jones 5, the fact remains that he is not the action star he once was. Even if the reports of his “crazy” energy on set are true, it doesn’t make much sense for an 80-year-old Ford to sprint away from boulders or duck out of the way of falls. Instead, director James Mangold could use the star’s advanced age to tell a different kind of Indiana Jones story.

Take the lessons of Mangold’s Wolverine movie LoganFor example, instead of hiding your hero’s age, turn him into a central part of the plot. There’s a chance here to discover what it means to hunt for artifacts and fight supernatural forces like an old man. This does not mean that Indiana Jones 5 can’t be crammed with fast-paced action sequences and wild stunts; however, it may reflect on Jones’ legacy, and what it means to be an adventurer whose body is slowly but surely failing. although Kingdom of the Crystal Skull started commenting on Jones’ age, only doing it by making cheap jokes. In the hands of Mangold, a more mature struggle with the subject is possible. We can at least hope that Indiana Jones 5The use of aging technology won’t stop the film from exploring the age of its hero in interesting ways.

Showcase new characters

In one of the bigger reveals to come out Indiana Jones 5pre-production, flea bag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has joined the cast as Helena, an “adventurer and femme fatale”, as composer John Williams has it. Rather than play the movie’s love interests, the talented actress and screenwriter seems to come on board as an explorer archaeologist in her own right. Some have speculated that Bridge’s admission made her a possible replacement for Dr. Jones makes, but it seems more likely that she will be an important secondary character and not the new face of the franchise.

Nevertheless, stars like Waller-Bridge promise to bring youthful energy to the world of Indiana Jones. This casting choice is similar to the decision to cast 22-year-old Shia LaBeouf Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, only this time we meet a fresh-faced female adventurer. Whatever Helena’s role in the story, she offers Mangold a great opportunity to mix up the pattern of the past Indiana Jones movies. Even as Harrison Ford plays the lead role, he can be brought into contact with Waller-Bridge in new ways, whether that’s by bumping heads or teaming up to take out Nazi villains. Not only this, but Waller-Bridge’s presence in the film may attract the attention of viewers unfamiliar with the franchise, as she has many fans herself.

Going beyond nostalgia

Everyone loves seeing an iconic line or moment from a classic movie referenced in a later sequel or remake, but lately this trope has been dying. Appeals to nostalgia can only go so far as to bring audiences to the theater, and fans old and new alike want more than cheap refreshments from old media. In order for the fifth Indiana Jones film to stand out from other sequels to classic franchises, James Mangold and his crew must avoid the pitfalls of today’s remake/requel culture (remake/sequel).

With a much older Harrison Ford playing Jones, there’s no point in letting him repeat the deadly stunts of the earlier films (like the famous boulder that Raiders or the tank yacht of The Last Crusade). Although we can probably hear Ford moan, “Why did they have to be snakes?” at some point in Indiana Jones 5, the cast and crew are hopefully planning to move beyond nostalgia with this entry in the series. Fortunately, Mangold is no stranger to reviving classic characters. With his hugely successful Wolverine movie, Logan, he proved he knows how to breathe new life into a franchise without relying on old tropes. Now to see if he can do it again.
