Inside Out 2 is officially in the works at Pixar

Inside Out 2 is officially in the works, as the sequel was announced during Friday’s Pixar panel at the D23 expo. The movie comes seven years after the original Inside out, a huge success with the public and the box office. The first film received an Academy Award win and a nomination for Best Animated Film and Best Writing on an Original Screenplay, respectively. In addition, Inside out brought in an astonishing $858 million at the box office.

Similar to the first, Inside Out 2 follows an all-new adventure in the mind of Riley, played by Kaitlyn Dias. The film will see Riley as a teenager, with new emotions introduced throughout the film. Meg LeFauve returns to write the screenplay, while Kelsey Mann directs. Although Mann’s directing credits are meager, she does have experience with animation and Pixar. The filmmaker wrote the story for The Good Dinosaur and served as story supervisor for Monsters University and Forward. Of course, the loss of Pete Doctor at the helm will be significant for the sequel as he is responsible for projects such as Upwards and Soulwith writing credits on the Toy Story franchise and Monsters Inc.

Inside out was led by Amy Poehler, with Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan and Paula Poundstone accompanying her. Further plot and cast details for Inside Out 2 are still unknown, as Disney kept the presentation at D23 relatively short. However, fans can expect the highly anticipated sequel to hit theaters sometime in 2024.

Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling may be from the sequel

Despite the huge success of the first film, Inside Out 2 may contain a few notable omissions. Bill Hader was Fear in the first film, with Mindy Kaling in the role of Disgust. While nothing has been confirmed, a report by Matthew Belloni in a puck newsletter began to stir rumors of the star’s departure from the film.

According to the report, Hader and Kaling were offered significantly less money compared to Amy Poehler, with the lead actor receiving a $5 million payday while the co-stars made $100,000 each. Belloni says that penny pinching appears to be a common trend for Pixar, and that despite renegotiation talks, no deal could be reached between the actors. Whatever the case, Inside Out 2 will no doubt feel the loss of two of its more prominent stars. There’s no official cast release yet for the sequel, so check back later to learn more about Pixar’s upcoming movie.
