In his first show after a week off, James Corden used his monologue on Monday’s “The Late Late Show” to address the issue of being banned from NYC restaurant Balthazar.
Corden explained what happened from his point of view, which he called “a mistake”, and essentially apologized to the restaurant’s staff, saying he expected them to be “allowed in one day, so … I’m there.” I can go and apologize personally.”
In case you need catch-up, Corden was banned from the restaurant for life by Keith McNally, who called him “a man’s little cretin” and “the most disrespectful customer to my Balthazar server because the restaurant Opened 25 years ago.” McNally said Corden was banned from his other restaurants as well. McNally revoked the ban after Corden apologized, but after Corden downplayed the whole thing in a New York Times interview, McNally said that Corden could come back if he admitted he was wrong and questioned. I apologize to the server.
“As some of you may have noticed, last week there were reports of me being banned from a restaurant,” Corden said in his monologue.
“And at the time, I considered tweeting about it or Instagramming about it, but whenever moments like this strike me, I like to adopt the British attitude of ‘keep calm and move on. Things are being written about me. ‘Never complain, never explain’ is my motto. But as my dad told me on Saturday, he said ‘Son, you complained, so you need to explain’ Maybe,'” Corden continued.
“See you have to take responsibility when you make a mistake, so I thought I would share what happened with you,” he said, adding that he had gone to Balthazar for breakfast with some friends.
“I really love it out there. I love the food, the vibe, the service. If I lived in New York, I would go every day. On the provision that, you know, they would let me in,” he Pointing to the ban, he said.
Corden said he informed employees that his wife had a “severe” allergy to certain foods, but that when her order was placed, it contained ingredients she was allergic to. Corden said that the restaurant got his order wrong three times, which he says was fueled by his rudeness.
“In the heat of the moment, I made a sarcastic, vulgar comment about cooking it myself, and it’s a comment I deeply regret. I understand the difficulties of being a server. I spent years in restaurant shifts.” Worked. I have so much respect and I value anyone who does this kind of work. And the team at that restaurant is awesome – so I love being there. The restaurant manager and the servers, they were lovely. They Brought 4 glasses of champagne as an apology, but we were like ‘It’s not necessary, we don’t need it.’ We had a great time. “But here’s the truth: Because I didn’t yell or scream – I didn’t get up from my seat, I didn’t name anyone or use abusive language – I was walking around thinking I had done nothing wrong. .. huh? But the truth is I have. I made an indecent comment, and it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment. It was indecent to the server,” Corden continued.
Corden said the owner cited two separate incidents—one in 2014 when he said he sent back a dish with hair on it, and the current incident. He said he immediately set about locating the owner’s phone and calling him.
“I told him how upset I was. I was so upset that everything I did, and everything I said, hurt anyone. And we had a great conversation. He appreciated the call. I’m so happy That was we got to clear the air and I thought we dealt with it in private,” Corden said. “But at this point, the story was there and, well, people were upset.”
Corden concluded: “Look, I get it. I totally understand that everyone is getting upset and I accept everyone’s opinion. I also hate, as I told the boss that day, that I’ve never bothered anyone, ever. That was never my intention. It just wasn’t. “I love that restaurant – I love the staff there – I hope I’ll be allowed in again one day , so when I get back in New York, I can go over there and apologize personally, which I totally will. ,
