James Gunn says he had to go back and tell Rocket’s story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn may have a lot on his plate with the DCU, but he says he had to close the Guardians story in a way only he could.

James Gunn can currently run headlong into the world of DC and certainly has a tough job ahead of him, but his mind is also very busy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at Marvel Studios. In a long interview with Weekly entertainment, Gunn revealed the biggest reason he wanted to come back to complete his trilogy and how he couldn’t have left without telling one character’s story. He said:

“One of the reasons I came back [make] this movie was because I felt like I had to tell Rocket’s story. I would have been very sad if I hadn’t completed the trilogy for many reasons, but I just feel very connected to Rocket. I feel like no one would be able to tell their full story if it weren’t for me. To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies. From the start, it’s rooted in who he is as a character. I think he exemplifies many of the traits of all Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas and it brings them together. I just think he’s more extreme than others.”

Everyone has their favorite Guardian, but Rocket is definitely at the top of many people’s lists, whether it’s for his foul-mouthed tirades, sassy attitude, or his endearing relationship with Groot. Now fans will learn all about the gun-loving raccoon, and it’s a story Gunn has been waiting to reveal.

“He was fine with being an animal, and he was transformed into something else he didn’t want to be. I think that transformation itself was extremely painful, but I also think it made him feel incredibly alienated from everyone else “In Vol. 3, we learn a lot about his past – where he came from, who he is and what he’s been through. It’s been a tough road for the little animal.”

Shall Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3 Be the best of the trilogy?

James Gunn wants to make sure he leaves Marvel Studios with a good feeling and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special; that seems very possible. While the film promises to feature the usual mix of action and humor, there will be a strong emotional thread running through the heart of the story. Gunn previously said:

“Full. 3 has a lot of the fun and wacky stuff of Guardians, but it’s also incredibly emotional. It’s the end of the story for this group of Guardians, so there was a lot of emotion around it. It was often very serious. The actors all really pushed themselves, especially Chris Pratt. It was heavy.”

Or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can deliver everything Gunn has promised, we’ll all find out in May, when the film hits theaters. While much of Phase 5 will be focused on the Multiverse, the Guardians of the Universe sequels mostly seem to be a standalone adventure just like the other Guardians films, which is arguably one of the film’s best features.
