Jamie Lee Curtis was surprised by the success of Knives Out

However, there is one project in particular that surprised Curtis: Blades off.


The 2019 murder mystery starred a fantastic cast with an excellent script and great direction from Rian Johnson. Blades off had every potential to succeed, but Curtis didn’t see it that way, at least not during filming. During an interview with Weekly entertainmentthe 63-year-old actor discussed her more than 40-year career in the industry and explained her process of filming Blades off.

I was actually quite isolated. I lived alone in this weird hotel, and I’m not a big part of the movie. I was alone a lot, and it was a very difficult time. It turned out to be this fantastic movie. I never knew the movie we were making was the movie we were making. It wasn’t clear to me because Ryan was so specific in his methodology, and it’s not like we’re all looking at monitors and seeing all the work. We had no idea. We would just do our little thing and then go home. It was just such a delightful surprise.”

Given the twists that Blades off it’s not surprising that Curtis was unaware of the film’s overall plot. It takes more than one watch to fully understand everything about Rian Johnson’s project, which is part of why his film is so successful.


Knives Out’s Success at the box office led to the sequel

Blades off was not only a huge success with critics and audiences, but also achieved huge numbers at the box office. The budget was $40 million, and the film had a total of $311 million by the time its theatrical run came to an end. The brand new IP turned out to be a success and everyone wanted to participate. According to an Variety report, Lionsgate eventually shopped around the sequels, with Netflix acquiring the rights for a lofty $450 million.

The streaming service hopes to recoup its money if Glass Onion: A Knife Mystery is almost ready for release. The sequel takes Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc to Greece for another whodunnit, with another great cast. Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline, Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom. Jr. will join the famed southern detective in his second big-screen case. The film’s cast may be aware of its future success as it is Rian Johnson’s second time, and fans are eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated follow-up. Glass Onion: A Knife Mystery will arrive on Netflix later this year, on December 23.
