Jan Psaki Says Trump Is ‘Already Fundraising’ Off His Latest Criminal Indictment

If you’re reading this, you know that on Thursday afternoon former President Donald Trump was impeached again. Naturally, MSNBC shows were all-in on that topic throughout the network’s Thursday night lineup.

Including (sorry) “All-In with Chris Hayes”, where Hayes hosted a roundtable discussion of the news that included fellow MSNBC host and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. He noted during the discussion that Trump was already using the news to raise money from supporters, a fact he saw as likely a contrast to discuss the matter.

So in case you need to catch up, Trump’s latest indictment includes undisclosed federal charges stemming from the special counsel’s investigation into his handling of classified documents. The news became public on Thursday when Trump himself announced it, and the indictment has since been confirmed by several major media outlets, including NBC.

However, the government is yet to release an official statement on the matter, so we’ll have to wait to find out what Trump is being accused of. That could happen on Tuesday when Trump surrenders himself to a federal court, although if recent history is any guide, it’s likely the details will be leaked at some point earlier. Meanwhile back on MSNBC, Hayes asked Psaki, “I wonder how you think the Biden administration handles it, how the Democrats handle it, how Republicans in Congress handle it.”

“It’s not Alvin Bragg in Manhattan that’s not part of the Biden administration,” Hayes continued, referring to the district attorney overseeing Trump’s criminal fraud case in New York City. “You can scoff at him and you can say all kinds of nasty things about him, you know, very gross, racist undertones. [But] This is the United States Department of Justice, which is currently headed by Joe Biden.

“Absolutely,” Psaki replied, “I mean look, I think Trump is clearly — he’s already fundraising for it, or trying to, and he’s clearly And is going to try to gather ground as he did around the indictment of Alvin Bragg.

“This case is different for a number of reasons. One of them, just on a pure messaging standpoint, a case where people are trying to publicly communicate and try and criticize how a former president The money the adult film star might have been paid is a little more complicated than that,” Psaki continued.

“Someone obstructing justice, someone withholding classified documents, potentially sharing them in a way that could harm our national security, that is different. And we must accept that How will that be communicated,” Psaki said.

“In terms of the White House, the way I hope they handle it,” she said, “is that Joe Biden is an institutionalist, he believes in the separation of the branches of government, and I doubt they will be very What we say about this is limited, especially in the short term.”

“Now, in the longer term, if there are additional allegations… once you get past the period of pure politicization of time, or accusations, there are ways to talk about the value to our national security, of governance. for the law, for democracy. And there’s a way for Joe Biden to do that in the campaign and in the speeches. But for now, I hope he stays very quiet, same with the Democrats,” Psaki said. clarified.
