Drug deals gone wrong, with an unwitting protagonist(s) in the middle, is nothing new to cinema – only new to Bollywood (unless we consider Phir Hera Pheri, which itself was a rip off). Hollywood movie True love and British movie Lock Stock and two smoking barrels (which Phir Hera Pheric heavily borrowed from) are arguably the best proponents of this dark comedy template. In reality, tamil movie Kolamaavu Kokila starring Nayantharaon which Good luck Jerry is based on, should also be a very good movie, from what I’ve heard and read (didn’t watch closely, but plan to now). Unfortunately, Janhvi Kapoor starrer Good Luck Jerry doesn’t fall in with these movies, which have exploited this premise down to the last darkly humorous and wickedly unpredictable drop. What is it about

The eponymous Jaya Kimati aka Jerry (Janhvi Kapoor) becomes a cocaine courier after accidentally disrupting the operation of a drug gang. She quickly becomes their company’s most valued pusher and in turn makes all the money it takes to pay her mother (Mita Vashisht) the treatment of cancer. The moment she wants out after witnessing double executions, things quickly get out of hand.

what’s hot

The best part of Good Luck Jerry, or rather the only good part, is a 20-25 minute portion in the second half, where Jerry, her family, a friendly neighbor and a duo of stackers try an assortment of dangerous drug dealers to break the bank. to lead the garden. The trajectory of the script isn’t bad either, as are the performances of most of the supporting cast including Mita Vashisht, Deepak Dobriyal, Neeraj Sood, Sushant Singh and Saurabh Sachdeva. Some scenes and dialogue, especially in the second half, really destroy you. Forba change, the montage (Prakash Chandra Sahoo, Zubin Sheikh) in an Indian film is pretty much on the money.

What not

The first half lacks quite a bit of momentum because the story usually just flows through the movements. And despite the second half accelerating, there are far too many flaws and loopholes to ignore, in addition to the ease with which Jerry and her family and friends manage to resolve predicament after predicament or the ease with which they emerge from a difficult one. position come after another. However, nothing compares to how badly director Siddharth Sen messes up the climax – who in their right mind (SPOILER ALERT) plays a sad skng during an action sequence?

Coming to Janhvi Kapoor, well, she just can’t bear a movie like this, partly because of her sheer lack of on-screen presence and mostly because of her inability to emote the simplest scenes, not to mention not being able to understand of her dialogue delivery when she sobs uncontrollably. Rangarajan Ramabadran’s camera work and Aman Pant’s background music are hard to beat, while Parag Chhabra fails to deliver a single noteworthy track.

BL verdict

A by-the-numbers first half, followed by a fairly funny second half that is eventually dragged down by far too many flaws and loopholes and a poorly directed climax, further compounded by Janhvi Kapoor’s complete ineptitude in emotion and lack of screen presence, only to be somewhat saved by a more than competent supporting cadt – that’s Disney Hotstar’s Good Luck Jerry in a nutshell for you. I go for 2.5 out of 5 stars.
