John Carpenter Could Be Qualified To Direct A Dead Space Movie

Horror mastermind John Carpenter is also a big gamer, but the only video game he would like to adapt into a movie is Dead Space.


If it’s long rumored Empty space movie ever made, maybe horror mastermind John Timmerman will be the one in the director’s chair. While Carpenter is best known for his film work, including directing one of the horror genre’s most beloved films of all time, Halloween, he is known to spend much of his free time gaming as well. Of course, sometimes he leans towards horror games and has long been a fan of the Empty space franchisee.


In a new interview with AV clubCarpenter talked about video games for some time. He was asked directly if he’s ever thought about directing a video game adaptation, a fair question considering how many of those have come out lately. Carpenter revealed how Empty space was the only title that came to mind, emphasizing that he is a huge fan of the franchise who loves every episode.

“The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is… Empty space. That would be a really great movie. I could… Well, they were all really good. I even like the last one, the action that no one else liked.

The filmmaker feels Empty space would make great source material for a movie, but that’s not to say that Carpenter enjoys getting scared while playing video games. He also said that he enjoys playing other games such as: precipitation where he doesn’t have to worry so much about his playable character getting killed.

“Well, I don’t like things jumping at me and threatening my character, no! Don’t threaten my character, I want to survive. Lots of games, they punish you for dying. It’s one of the things I like about precipitation, they don’t punish you. You die over and over on a tough mission. I like that.”

John Carpenter has been monitoring dead space for years

This isn’t the first time Carpenter has shown an interest in spinning Empty space in a movie. Back in 2013, he was also quite clear about his desire to take on such a project. as the Christine helmer told Game Informer at the time:

“I would like to create dead space [into a film], I’ll tell you now. It’s ready. I maintain that Dead Space would just be a great movie because these people get on an abandoned, decommissioned spaceship and they have to fire it up and there’s something on board. It’s just great stuff.”

Since almost a decade has passed without the Empty space movie progresses with Carpenter, the chances of it happening don’t seem very high. Still, the rise in popularity of video game adaptations in recent years may increase the chances Dead space: the movie finally forward. If Carpenter gets his wish to direct that potential movie himself, it would be the first movie he’s directing since. the district was released in 2010.
