MTV viewers were largely disappointed by Johnny Depp’s appearance at the 2022 VMAs on Sunday, which merely showed his face superimposed on a floaty “Moon Person” suit, joking, “I needed the job.”
Fans mocked the “big comeback” and “big redemption arc” of the actor, whose career took a huge hit in his messy divorce from ex Amber Heard. Depp appeared several times at the beginning of the show, including a time when he joked about taking any kind of job, and that was that, as he was never seen again inside the moon person’s helmet.
Several people took issue with MTV showing the actor, who has been accused of verbal and physical abuse by Heard. “Johnny Depp’s Man in the Moon is so creepy… I know they did this to build hype and go viral on Twitter but it’s just a dumb and embarrassing move to draw attention to this lackluster award show,” tweeted a woman named Dominic.
Depp won his much-publicized libel case against Heard in June, apparently paving the way for him to re-enter the Hollywood atmosphere. As was the case during the trial, the internet was divided into Team Johnny and Team Amber – one fan praised Depp”ability to make fun of oneself” while another detractor called it a “jumpscare”.
For what it’s worth, Depp previously donned a spacesuit in the 1990s movie “The Astronaut’s Wife.”
