What is it about?
Nyonika (Kajol) and her family of four, two daughters and husband Rajeev (Jisshu Sengupta) are living a perfect life. Jisshu is a judge and he had been clear from the start to take every opportunity that came his way. He wants a bigger house, luxury cars, foreign travel. While he gets all that and more, he is also exposed for asking for sexual favors as a bribe. The entire universe of Sengupta comes crashing down when clips of Rajeev indulging in sexual activities circulate on social media and news channels. He is imprisoned, all his assets and bank accounts have been shut down. Unable to provide for herself and her family, Nyonika returns to work after 13 years. Good old friend Vishal (Alyy Khan), who is the head of one of the top law firms, comes to support. While Nyonika was a top lawyer before she quit due to marriage and kids, now she has to start over and prove herself. Slowly, case by case, she begins to regain her conviction and trust, beat the competition and solidify her position in the company, while also rising in the eyes of people who condemned her for her husband’s misdeeds. But now this new lawyer Nyonika, who doesn’t lose a case, is fighting to get her husband out of jail?

What’s hot?

Kajol, Kajol and Kajol. The actress is one of the best we’ve got and she’s a joy to watch. Be it her time with family, in court defending her clients or at the law firm fighting competition and petty politics, Kajol does justice to all the different facets of her character Nyonika Sengupta. What you do miss is her crackling smile. But she proves she’s just as good in a character who’s vulnerable yet brave, helpless yet stubborn. She brings out the emotions of a woman who has been wronged, who is judged by her own family and society for “not keeping an eye” on her husband, with absolute finesse. The setting of the series also does justice to the genre and is not in sync with the atmosphere of the story. Jisshu Sengupta doesn’t have much to do, Alyy, Sheeba, Kubbra look good. The series attempts to expose the workings of the justice system, the media process beyond the legal verdicts, the emotional and mental effect it has on the individuals involved, while interspersing it with the dynamics of a high-profile man-woman in the middle of it.

What not?
The writing lets the artists down tremendously. While the cases are interesting and raise your expectations of what happens next, the arguments in court are so juvenile that they’ll leave you agitated as you move from one case to the next, from one episode to the next. The drama, the emotion, the OTT arguments that are the absolute essence of the courtroom genre are missing. The lack of depth in any of the various sub-plots and the main plot itself is a major disappointment.

Pronunciation:
Watch out for Kajol, who doesn’t falter once in one frame. The Trail will only make you want to see more of this brilliant actress. We go for 3 stars.

Judgement : 3 out 5
