Kantara makers are accused of plagiarism over their Thaikkudam Bridge song ‘Varaha Roopam’; claims it’s similar to their song ‘Navarasam’

Kantara hit theaters last month, receiving applause from both the public and celebrities in both the Bollywood and Southern film industries. Their soundtracks, which were also released around the same time, also received some rave reviews until some fans started noticing the track’s strong similarities, ‘Varaha Roopam’ and the Thaikkudam Bridge song, ‘navarasam’. While many of them have tagged the band on social media, the latter has finally responded with a statement they shared on their official Instagram page.

Their statement not only clarified that they had nothing to do with the film, but they also claimed that it was a clear case of copyright infringement. It read: “We would like our listeners to know that Thaikkudam Bridge is in no way or form affiliated with “Kantara”. The inevitable similarities between our IP “Navarasam” and “Varaha Roopam” in terms of audio is therefore a blatant copyright infringement. From our point of view, the line between “Inspired” and “Plagiarism” is clear and indisputable and therefore we will take legal action against the creative team responsible for it. There has been no acknowledgment of our rights to the content and the song is propagated as an original piece of work by the film’s creative team. We ask the support of our listeners and encourage you to spread the same. Also ask our fellow artists to share your thoughts and voice your opinion about protecting the copyright of music.”

In an earlier interview, the music composer of KantaraAjaneesh Loknath had responded to the trolls on social media that the song was a blatant copy of ‘navarasam’clarifying that it was inspired by the Kerala based band’s music style but different from their song.

Kantara is expected to be a fantasy drama based on folklore related to a land dispute between the villagers and their landlord. Directed by Rishab Shetty as well, the film released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil.
