Freddy starring Kartik Aaryan and Alaya F started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from December 2, 2022. The film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh whose most notable films are Khoobsurat, Veere Di Wedding, Plan A Plan B. So looking at the Freddy trailer, it was clear that it is a genre he has not tried before. Therefore, there were no high hopes for the film itself. However, his male star Kartik Aaryan was the rare one to shine in the recent past where success was so unpredictable and the biggest stars and tried and tested formulas stopped working. He first created a huge and positive sound with his OTT release Dhamaka and then the theatrical smash hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The fact that he is trying something new again was reason enough to be excited about what Freddy has in store. Read this week’s review for the verdict on the new film on OTT. What is it about?

Freddy is about Dr. Freddy Ginwala (Kartik Aaryan), a shy and lonely dentist who is looking for his soul mate. He has been signed up on a matrimonial site and has met many girls, but “lack of compatibility” has prevented him from taking the next step. A chance encounter with Kainaz Irani (Alaya F) at a wedding results in love at first sight. Freddy is in love, but the bubble bursts when he realizes she is married to a controlling, possessive Rustom (Sajjad Delafrooz). But that’s not the end of their story. Freddy and Kainaz soon turn from strangers to doctor-patient and that gives Freddy another chance to be close to Kainaz and observe her well enough to know she’s in a bad marriage; desperate to get out but can’t. Frustrated with what her life has become with the wifebeater monster she married, Kainaz finds comfort in Freddy’s arms. But they can’t be together until Rustom exists. Is it love or his obsession that turns Freddy, a doctor by day, into a criminal with a dangerous mind? Will Freddy finally unite with his soulmate Kainaz? The twists and turns of what follows as Freddy and Kainaz try to find each other make up the bulk of the story. What’s hot?

Kartik Aaryan as Freddy is a joy to watch. The actor will surprise you with his layered performance. The way he goes from the sweet, shy and smiling dentist one minute to someone capable of plotting and planning something sinister is unbelievable. The fact that he transitions quite effortlessly shows how much work has gone into preparing for his role. He’s endearing one minute and scaring you the next as you try to fathom what his next move would be. Alaya F is making the most of the screen time she’s been given, but it seemed like the director didn’t see the need to “strip” her character anymore. The background music complements the plot and the screenplay is passable. But aside from Kartik’s performance, there’s not much to write home about.

What not?

It’s all okay until Freddy turns into a revenge drama. While the plot focuses on the petty sadistic revenges, there’s nothing about how it’s planned. While the acts are quite brutal in nature, the lack of detail makes it all look youthful. What could have been something that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you nervous turns into just a series of unbelievable events. While Kartik did justice to his role as Freddy, there was a huge amount of room to better outline his character. There’s a huge miss when it comes to understanding his childhood trauma and how he overcame it, or not, and whether that played a part in making him the person he turns out to be as an adult. The plot needed a good ‘stuffing’ to save Freddy from harm.

BL verdict

Watch Freddy witness Kartik Aaryan in a never-before-seen avatar. The actor gets better with each project and surpasses himself. With Freddy, he took a clear risk trying something new and difficult, where there was tremendous scope and the danger of faltering at every scene. He has put his dedication and hard work into playing Dr. Freddy and it shows. An extra star only to Kartik for choosing a role out of his comfort zone and doing it full justice.
