If Bollywood has been adept at churning our high-end cinema that has also been big hits in a particular genre, then they must be thrillers. And among the pantheon of great thrillers, the Hindi film industry has also churned, some like Kaun and Ittefaq (the 1969 original) stand out for how they nail that claustrophobic milieu, which ramps up the tension in any suspense-filled plot.

Dhokha Round D Corner, directed by Kookie Gulati, and starring Khushalii Kumar, R Madhavan, Darshan Kumaar and Aparshakti Khurana tries something similar, albeit with an undercurrent of sensuality running through it. Does it also take its place in that pantheon? Well, it almost does, and that’s as pleasant a surprise as anyone could have hoped, with a lack of really good Bollywood since AndhaDhun. So, are you excited about what to watch this weekend or this week and wondering if Dhokha Round D Corner is worth your time? Scroll down for my full Dhokha Round D Corner movie review below…

What is it about

Sanchi (Khushalii Kumar) and Sinha (R. Madhavan)’s facade of a happy marriage crumbles when terrorist Gul (Aparshakti Khurana) enters their apartment and takes Sanchi hostage. The more Inspector Malik (Darshan Kumaar) tries to resolve the situation, the more he and the public are drawn into divergent perspectives of what’s really going on.

what’s hot

All credit to Kookie Gulati and Neeraj Singh for the many twists and turns they weave into their screenplays and for how none of them seep into over-the-top territory, keeping you on your toes until the very end. Further credit to Kookie Gulati for directing this screenplay – a multi-perspective story with the twists balanced on a tightrope could have fallen off the tail so easily, but he weaves it all into one tight, addictive ride. Of course, that didn’t work out with some fine performances, with Khushalii Kumar leading the way, walking a fine path between sensual, vulnerable and cunning, while Madhavan and Darshan Kumaar gave her good support in their shortened screen time. The camera work by Amit Roy, the editing by Dharmendra Sharma and the background music by Amar Mohile also combine well to brighten up the mysterious atmosphere.

What not

The big disappointment is Aparshakti Khurana, who tried his best but couldn’t crack his part. In addition, production values could have been much better as well, as they pretty much derail all the good work from the other departments. Also some subplots just don’t work and only manage to hinder the pace.

BL verdict

With little to complain about, Dhokha Round D Corner is a tight, edgy, claustrophobic Bollywood thriller done well after ages, with twists to keep you guessing and performances to wrap them up. Definitely a captivating watch for thriller enthusiasts. I’m going for 3.5 out of 5 stars.
