Lust Stories 2 has managed to grab everyone’s attention. The anthology of four films by four directors depicting different forms of lust and love received positive reviews from all angles. In R Balki’s film Made For Each Other, Angad Bedi, Mrunal Thakur and Neena Gupta play pivotal roles. The story is about a grandmother who advises children to ensure physical compatibility before marriage. The idea of a pre-marriage test drive is the crux of the story. We reached out to Angad Bedi to find out more about Lust Stories 2. Excerpt from the interview here.
What was your reaction to Lust Stories 2?
I loved the screenplay. I just found it very different from normal. You know, you have a grandparent perspective, a grandmother talking about what a modern couple should be like and what they should all be discovering and experiencing about each other. I just found that one-liner really endearing. It was fun, it was humorous, it had a lot of sensitivity, it had love leading to the whole lust aspect. I always enjoy not only exploring different genres, but I just felt there was an opportunity here to romanticize Mrunal, not only as a character in Veda, but with her and understanding her. I really follow her work and I thought she is very good as an actor. I like to work with energetic actors. And Mr. Balki, what can I say, this is my second project with him. I finished Ghoomer. While I was filming for Ghoomer, he saw me in the edit, while you saw the edit, he offered me this movie. He said I see you as correct as Arjun. And my Arjun as a character is very sensitive, he is very sweet, his presence is there, but at the same time he is very selfless as a person. He said I want all those traits in the character and I just think you should do it. I said, are you offering it to me? He said yes you should consider. I said Balki sir, if you want me there just say so. He said yes, you will be with me for the next five days. That’s how the movie was born. And it was nice because I really appreciate him as a creator. His understanding of man as man is immense.
What was Neha Dhupia’s reaction?
She was part of the first if you remember. So, you know, it was fun to be a part of the second. She enjoyed and loved the movie and she is very happy to see the movie. And for us, we take great pride in working with very good filmmakers. Neha worked with Karan and I worked with Balki sir. And I just feel like an actor is only as good or bad as its creator. And we have been treated very well, both Mrunal and I. Very sweet, very soft, very soft. We were also, you know, in our own energy bringing something to the characters that Mr. Balki made it happen in the most beautiful way. So I feel like you know, it’s been great. What happens in love is more of a love story to us that leads to lust. It’s not a lust story if you’ve seen the movie. So what happens is that love is a very simple emotion that we all grew up with. But to play the simple emotion on the screen is a very complex and complicated way. Because it is also very easy. But then it should look very natural. Sometimes you have to be in a completely different zone for love. Love is all about giving. It’s not about taking. So my character is like that too. It’s about how you can give. He is the person people should be, if they see Arjun as a character they must feel that he is not a sweet boy in India. And that was my moral victory. This is because when they saw Rajveer Singh from Pink, they said there is no grayer man than him in India. People liked it, so my work is done.
What do you think about a pre-wedding test drive?
Yes. Why not? It’s very important to be in this space because if you have physical compatibility, you need to know in advance. It’s not like your partner’s physical compatibility is bad. It’s not that the husband is bad. I feel like there is a reason why you need to figure out all these things because if you want to be happy in your marriage there will be fights between men and women. There will be fights, there will be disagreements, there will be love. But if you have good physical compatibility, all negative traits like quarrels, fights, etc. will be hidden. But if you don’t have physical compatibility, the relationship will be very cold.
