Clearly the success of Top Gun: Maverick has raised the question of whether there will be more from the franchise, and while there are rumors of TV series and even Top Gun 3, it all seems to depend on whether Tom Cruise wants to strap in for another flight. According to his co-star Miles’ Teller, Cruise has discussed a possible third film, but apparently only in passing. This is something that producer Jerry Bruckheimer also said in an earlier interview:
“I can’t tell you what the future will bring. If you had asked me in ’86, ‘Do you think there will be a sequel in a few years?’ I might have said. But it took 30 years to make it happen!”
Ultimately, Tom Cruise is currently working on his Mission Impossible return, and now 60 years old, it’s really questionable whether he’s willing to risk his life again to perform some of the breathtaking stunts he’s known for. Of course, that doesn’t rule out some sort of spin-off series targeting other “top guns” and that could be something Paramount wants to pursue as they continue to bolster their Paramount+ content. But for now, fans are still licking everything Top Gun: Maverick had to offer, and it’s not often that a successful franchise can just disappear.
