MTV Movie and TV Awards 2023: live event cancelled, writers strike

The MTV Movie & TV Awards will no longer be live: Plans for a live ceremony this Sunday have been shelved and replaced with a pre-recorded broadcast in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, TVLine has learned.

“As we carefully navigate the best way to deliver the first fan rewards show we imagined our team had worked so hard to create, we are moving away from a live event that still allows us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive premieres, irreverent categories our audiences have come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best in film and TV throughout the year. elapsed,” executive producer Bruce Gillmer said in a statement.

The annual awards show will still air this Sunday at 8/7c on MTV and its sister channels, but it has been hampered by a number of high-profile dropouts due to the writers’ strike which began earlier this week. Most notably, Drew Barrymore, who was to host this year’s ceremony, dropped out on Thursday, citing the strike as the reason: “I’ve listened to the writers, and in order to really respect them, I’m going to move from hosting MTV’s Les Movie & TV Awards Live in Solidarity with Strike Outstanding Writers also intended to picket outside the live event in Los Angeles this Sunday.
