National treasure had its fans, but just not enough for Disney to risk more money on a show that probably wouldn’t make an impressive return.

Since National Treasure: Book of Secrets debuted in 2007, fans wanted to know when Nicolas Cage would return to the franchise for a third film. “We said we wanted to do another National Treasure and they said, ‘Sure, let’s come up with a new cast.’ At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage — which we’re still doing. So that’s ongoing.”
