Nawazuddin Siddiqui became the pioneer for actors when it comes to jumping on the OTT train. He was featured in Netflix’s critically acclaimed web series, Holy Games, way back in 2018 and it exploded in such a way that there was no looking back for the digital industry. In 2020, when movies were released directly online due to the closure of cinemas, his part of his life was ghoomketu was the first to premiere on the internet, on Zee5. His Netflix original movies were also released that same year, Raat Akeli Hai and serious men. He did not have a release in 2021 and was seen directly in 2022 as the antagonist in Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti 2. His fans have wondered that when he’s completed nearly a dozen projects, why don’t we see his new releases often in cinemas or on OTT?
Nawazuddin Siddiqui suffers the most as OTT platforms stop accepting films for direct digital releases; 7 Actor’s Movies Awaiting Release
A source told Bollywood Hungama, “According to the latest developments, OTT platforms no longer accept movies for instant premieres. They insist that producers release their films in theaters first. For direct-to-digital movies, the responsibility for marketing the movie rests with streaming giants. In many cases, they were handed mediocre products, which didn’t get the viewership they wanted, leading to losses for OTT platforms as they paid a bomb to buy the movies. Hence the change in policy.”
The source continued: “The small movies have taken the brunt of this new rule. And many movies of Nawazuddin Siddiqui are stuck like Jogira Sara Ra Ra, Noorani Chehra, Adbhut, Sangeen, Bole Chudiyan, Rome Roam Mein, No Land’s man etc. The OTT giants asked the producers to release the film in theaters first. But in theaters, these movies aren’t going to get healthy box office returns, given the current market for small, indie films.”
The source continued: “In July, the producers of Jogira Sara Ra Ra made it clear that, contrary to reports, their film will be released in theaters first. But the truth is they were forced to do this and would have loved to skip a theatrical release.”
The source also added:Bole Chudiyan has long been finished and plays Tamannaah Bhatia. The same applies to Rome Roam Mein; it is directed by Tannishtha Chatterjee and she also stars in the film. Eros International has supported the film. But getting it in theaters is a struggle because it’s too niche.”
In July 2022, Nawazuddin Siddiqui made his displeasure clear with the streaming giants. In an interview, he said, “There are so many movies that even OTT platforms can’t use. Film festivals mein unn filmon ke baare mein taille ki jaa rahi hai.”
In the same interview he thundered: “OTT coee stars chahiye, superhit stars. But who started OTT with? Actors! It (the medium and its success) came through them. But today no one feels the need for actors on the medium.”
However, all hope is not lost. The source revealed: “Nawazuddin Siddiqui has also worked in afwaah, starring Bhumi Pednekar, and directed by Sudhir Mishra. T-Series has co-produced the film and they will be releasing it in theaters soon, maybe this year. The other movie to get a confirmed release is Tiku Weds Sheru. Produced by Kangana Ranaut, it’s an Amazon Prime original movie.”
Meanwhile, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is currently working on haddi. The first look, featuring him as a woman, went viral on social media. He will also be featured in a prominent role in the biopic of Chhattisgarh’s legendary folk artist, Teejan Bai. Nawazuddin’s wife, Aaliya Siddiqui, is the producer of this film.
