Entertainment Weekly gives Mission Impossible fans the first look at new footage from the franchise’s upcoming installment, including the first footage of Pom Klementeiff’s enigmatic villain. As noted by EW, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one has seen its fair share of roadblocks due to the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic-related closures, writer and director Christopher McQuarrie (who also directed 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and that of 2018 Mission: Impossible – Fallout) worked on the seventh installment in the Mission Impossible franchise when the virus hit.

He said: “We were in Venice, Italy, two days away from filming in February 2020. We were at ground zero before the pandemic. Now I’m here to talk to you!”

For the next three years, McQuarrie and series star Tom Cruise (who also served as a producer on the film) worked on filming the seventh entry in the series. Mission Impossible franchise in several locations including England, Abu Dhabi and Norway despite the pandemic-related roadblocks.

However, the long recording time also led to other problems. For example while working on Dead cutleryMcQuarrie and Cruise eventually had to replace Nicholas Hoult with Esai Morales due to scheduling conflicts with Hoult’s Hulu show The big. Similarly, McQuarrie noted that franchise newcomer Hayley Atwee “may have been on this movie for over 100 days before she had her first dialogue scene, due to the chaotic nature of the production.”

Decisive

Finally, after years of delay, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one is expected to hit theaters on July 14. Speaking to EW during an early premiere of the film, the director stated that he never doubted that the film would go unfinished. He said:

“If you’re making a movie with Tom, it’s not really a factor. And about these movies, we like to say, ‘Disaster is an opportunity to excel.’ We lean into the chaos. We don’t invite it, but we accept it as part of the process.”

The writer similarly noted that the forthcoming Mission Impossible movie will be worth the wait and will feature plenty of notable action sequences, such as the already publicly revealed stunt involving Cruise riding a motorcycle off a cliff in Norway.

From his London office, McQuarrie (who is currently overseeing post-production on the forthcoming Mission Impossible movie and also preparations for Dead Reckoning Part two) told EW:

“This has been the most incredible adventure and the most incredible continuum between, in one state or another, working on Top gun, Mission 7And Mission 8all at once. Top gun is now behind us, and we are in a place where Mission 7 is almost out in theaters, and it’s so surreal to think I’ll be working in July [on] one movie at a time. I don’t know what to do with myself!”
