Nimrat Kaur praises her latest web series School Of Lies. The show is a mystery thriller drama in which a 12-year-old boy goes missing from a boarding school. Nimrat Kaur, who plays a consultant on the Disney+ Hotstar web series, spoke candidly with Bollywood Life about her experience working with young children and much more. School Of Lies is a gripping story about young children and deals with topics such as child abuse, sexual assault, complex relationships and more.
Why did you agree to a role in School of Lies?
The fact that it was so unconventional in its writing, it was a very non-judgmental and extremely empathetic role and I thought it was very sensitive and very sophisticated given how tricky the subject matter was. It was a part I hadn’t come across before.
Playing a character where you have your vulnerabilities and still have to be strong for others around you, so was it a challenge?
I was deeply moved to be a part of something like this because I feel like when you play a character that is written with so much depth and sensitivity you come out learning about life and it can be life changing as a experience. It changes you and makes you more sensitive and allows you to recognize what lies outside your sphere of life. So that was an extremely beautiful experience for me, and I really learned a lot from it.
Your role and the series dealt with drug abuse, child sexual abuse, molestation and complex relationships. Is it more satisfying when a role isn’t just a role, but has so many layers and gives you a chance to talk about something that’s important?
Yes absolutely. It is immensely satisfying and it is immensely satisfying when a piece of work goes beyond just job satisfaction. Sometimes art has the power to move societies and lives and to bring people into life-changing experiences. So it’s very, very heartwarming.
School of Lies is a gripping drama about some important but uncomfortable topics. What was your response to the response string you received?
It’s really nice to hear people’s reaction, how much they’ve related to the show and how moved they are, and how many lives it has touched. Because we have all seen or heard or experienced or, you know, directly or indirectly encountered such instances and situations. So it’s very hard to know that the intent with which the show was made has penetrated and warmed hearts and it’s not an easy story to tell. It takes a lot of courage to set up such a story. So it feels really, really nice to hear that people have bonded with it and that they’ve accepted it with so much love.
Lunchbox completed 10 years, what do you think of the movie?
Well, it’s a gift that keeps on giving. I absolutely love it. It’s very, very nice to hear that people remain moved.
