Nimrat Kaur on empowering roles for women on OTT, ‘Things are more balanced’ [Exclusive]

The OTT platform has evolved a lot in recent years. It’s hard for movies as people prefer OTT to watching movies in theaters these days. The digital space is also far ahead of cinemas in terms of content. Creators have more freedom to show bold content while creating a particular project for streaming platforms, while they are restricted for theatrical movies due to the censorship board. With the emergence of OTT, it is also striking that women play powerful roles and get just as much stage as men. Nimrat Kaur, who plays a major role in School of Lies, talked about OTT content, female roles, working on the series and more. School of Lies is a mystery thriller series streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. As an actor, do you feel that content on OTT is bolder when it comes to subject matter compared to movies? Also Read – School Of Lies: Nimrat Kaur Calls Mystery Thriller Web Series Life-Changing Experience [Exclusive]

All you know when you’re working in a movie right now, we don’t really know if it’s going to be a theatrical release or come on OTT, sometimes you just make a project and then you know you’re waiting to see what happens to it. What’s happening is with OTT and the amount of work that’s going on, it’s getting very interesting because the job opportunities have increased so much and people have so much more to choose from the subjects as artists on camera, off camera, everything, so the quality of work in general has gone up. That’s the only big change and I love that. Also read – Gadar 2: Sunny Deol reveals challenges in the release of Gadar in 2001

And do you feel that women and men are on an equal footing on OTT and that our cinema is finally ready for a change?

I think cinema has been ready for change for a long time, you know. I don’t think it’s just because of OTT. I think OTT has certainly increased those opportunities a lot more where much bolder and much more different parts are written for women. So that’s why it feels that way, but now things are a little bit more balanced.

In School of Flies you worked with teenagers. How was the experience? How easy or difficult was it to work with them?

It was amazing. They were delicious. They were so bright and bubbly and so wonderful. I had a really nice time with the kids. You know, they’re so ahead of their age. They’re exposed to world cinema, world music, all kinds of incredible, amazing things. I had a great time with Varin Roopani who plays the role of Vikram and he is really ahead of his age. I had a really good time chatting with him and we would talk about movies and things that interested us.

You have also worked in Bollywood and Hollywood, so what comparison do you want to draw?

No, I don’t like comparing different industries like that. I think every industry has its own strengths and weaknesses. Just had a great time both abroad and here.

How do you deal with criticism and trolls?

Well, I’m not trolling at all. I choose to ignore trolls and trolls 100% and completely. I don’t feel like wasting my time and energy on it. I choose to pay attention to criticism that I respect, and criticism is only respectable to me if it is done with good intent and with a place where they should take a position that justifies their criticism and then earns my respect and then I listen carefully and I try to improve what comes out of that corner.
