What is it about?

Adipurush starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh and others is an Om Raut film based on the Sanskrit epic Ramayan. Prabhas plays the role of Raghav – Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon plays the role of Janaki – Maa Sita, and Saif Ali Khan is the evil Lankesh – Raavan. The story follows the ancient script narrated by Maharishi Valmiki. Raghav, Janaki and Laxman/Shesh are forced into exile for 14 years. Janaki is kidnapped by Lankesh and then it is the power of Lord Ram destroying Lankesh’s kingdom to bring Janaki back. Over the years, we have seen many versions of Ramayan presented to the public. Here is another one with an extra power of Rs 500 crore mega budget.

What’s Hot?

Adipurush is a recreation of an epic we’ve heard about since childhood. We’ve seen loads of versions, and every bit of it is thoroughly etched in our memory. This Om Raut film is quite an attempt to rewind and re-enter the spirit of mythology. Ramayan is an epic that spans more than 14 years and has several aspects. Om Raut has tried to include as many parts as possible, but the film mainly focuses on the war between Raghav and Lankesh. The makers have not deviated from the actual storyline of Ramayan, but Lankesh/Raavan’s portrayal seemed to be inspired by some of the evil forces seen in Hollywood dramas like Vikings, Lord of The Rings and more. The VFX and the CGI brought the movie to life. The scene where Jatayu tries to save Janaki from Lankesh is beautifully done. Sometimes it feels like we are watching a beautiful animated movie with beautiful jungles and the Vanar Sena adding to the charm. The first half of the film contains a few good scenes that will appeal to the audience. Prabhas as Raghav has tried to do justice to the role of Lord Ram. He has less dialogue than expected, but he gives his honest performance. Kriti Sanon looks gorgeous all the way through, but doesn’t have much to do in the movie. Sunny Singh tries his best to be Lord Ram’s obedient brother. Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh is the one who stands out. Coming to the background score, it’s quite powerful and captivating. The tune Jai Shri Ram grows on you and stays with you for a long time.

What not?

The movie lacks the feeling. Apart from Saif Ali Khan, none of the star cast seems convincing enough to be the mythological characters. Even with Lankesh, the makers seem to have made too much use of creative freedom. Lanka in Ramayan is called the Swarn Nagri, but in Adipurush it doesn’t come close to being one. It’s a dark empire filled with strange looking creatures. Considering that many aspects are missing, the film does not take the viewers back to the beauty of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. Most of the movie only focuses on the fight between Raghav and Lankesh and that’s not what Ramayan is all about. It’s more like a straight action movie with mythology as a backdrop. Some scenes and dialogues are laughable indeed.

Pronunciation

Watch Adipurush without high expectations. Yes, it’s visually beautiful and all, but it won’t leave a lasting impression. Don’t watch the movie if you want to immerse yourself in the mythology, it’s all about the action.

Judgement : 2.5 out 5
