Quentin Tarantino has denied Kanye West’s claims that the director stole his idea for the plot of his Oscar-winning film. Django unleashed.
Quentin Tarantino denies Kanye West’s claims about making up a story for his Oscar film Django Unchained – “I had the idea for Django a while before I ever met Kanye.”
According to Collider, West claimed earlier this week that he pitched the concept for Django Unchained to Tarantino and the movie star Jamie Foxx. Speaking on the Jimmy Kimmel Live talk show Tarantino refuted West’s claims that the latter came up with the idea before Django unleashed explaining that the idea he’s referring to was for another project.
“The idea that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django doesn’t make sense and then he told me that, and I said, ‘Hey, wow, that’s a really great idea. Let me take Kanye’s idea and make it Django unleashed out,’” said Tarantino. “That didn’t happen.” The filmmaker went on to explain that he had the idea long before he… “Donda” rapper. “I had the idea for Django for a while before I met Kanye,” said the filmmaker.
“He wanted to make a huge movie version of ‘The College Dropout’ [West’s debut studio album] the way he did the album – so he wanted great directors to do several songs from the album and then release it as this giant movie – no video, nothing as gross as videos, it was movies, it would be based on movies on each of the different tracks.”
Django unleashed is a western action film, telling the story of Django, a slave who is freed and joins forces with a bounty hunter to save his wife, who has been enslaved by Calvin, a harsh plantation owner. In addition to Foxx, the 2012 film also starred Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher and James Remar.
“We used it as an excuse – me and Kanye – we used it as an excuse to meet, and so we met and we had a really good time,” Tarantino further revealed of their meeting on set. “And he did have an idea for a video and I think it was for the ‘Gold Digger’ video that he was going to be a slave. And the whole story was the slave story where he’s a slave, and he sings “Gold Digger.” And it was very funny. It was a very, very funny idea.”
“A funny slave video?” Kimmel then asked. “It was meant to be ironic,” Tarantino clarified. “And it’s like a big musical. I mean spared no expense with him in these slave clothes, doing everything. And then that was also part of the pushback part on it.” He then decided to add: “I wish he had done it. It sounded really cool. That’s what he means anyway.”
