Review by: Russel D’Silvac
Shamshera has finally been released on the big screen, with the aim of becoming the next masala entertainer on the big screen – the kind that used Bollywood in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and to some extent in the early 2000s with bizarre successful tendencies. but ashamed the mail turned its back, except for Rohit Shetty. So, is Shamshera bringing back those golden days, especially when it comes to dacoit actors, otherwise known as Hindi cinema’s homemade brand of curry westerns? Well, the Karan Malhotra director, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoorstarted well at first, but the second half slows things down a bit.
So, are you excited about what to watch this weekend or this week and wondering if Shamshera is worth your time? Scroll down for my full shamshera movie review…
What is it about
Shamshera/Balli (Ranbir Kapoor) is the messiah of his tribe, shunned by the high caste henchmen of the British because he belongs to the lower caste. The father’s legacy and shame cannot be shaken by the son as he once again stands up for his people, both against the British and against the corrupt Indian police officers such as Daroga Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt).

what’s hot
Shamshera has every nostalgic legacy you could hope for from the best dacoit movies of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but writer-director Karan Malhotra and his trio of co-writers don’t just play on nostalgia and imbue the film with plenty of modernity. elements to attract viewers of all ages and demographics. Everything from the hero introduction to the revenge theme to dual roles to rescuing your heroine to fulfilling your prophecies comes straight from the pages of Manmohan Desai, Ramesh Sippy, Raj Khosla and Nasir Hussain, but the contemporary touch that given to it, all is Karan Malhotra. Big word also for the cinematography of Anay Goswamy and YRF who once again show their technical finesse in the VFX department.
As for Ranbir Kapoor, he totally nails it in his first dual role, showing both intensity and paisa-vasool massive heroism, while Sanjay Dutt is delightfully diabolical and sometimes even steals the scene from more than an efficient Ranbir. Vaani Kapoor’s character is limited, but still quite important to the plot. The rest of the supporting cast like Ronit Roy and Saurabh Shukla are in great shape. The first issue, Fitoor, is also excited to watch on the big screen. The confrontation between Ranbir and Sanju Baba in the interval block and also the climax are other highlights.
What not
Shamshera starts in a slightly uneven tone when the plot is set up in the first 10-15 minutes. The first half could also have been trimmed by 8-10 minutes overall. None of the songs other than Fitoor leave a mark, which is fortunately why the brands must have decided not to show the rest in its entirety. However, the main issues are Ranbir’s loot, which should have been worked out a lot more as it’s an important part of his character and the plot, and everything happens way too easily. Also, Karan Malhotra should have had more, big heroic moments apart from the interval and the climax, especially after the bar has been set so high by the south recently with RRR and Pushpa. The second half also resumes in a rather dull, melodramatic tone after things have been left at a high level in the intermission, and it takes a good 30 minutes to get back on track.
BL verdict
Shamshera has a very entertaining first half, closed with a good interval block, but in the second half, the situation only drops before the procedure to pick up the climax again, which is a major highlight. Ranbir Kapoor totally nails it in his first dual role, showing both intensity and paisa-vasool mass heroism, while Sanjay Dutt is delightfully diabolical. Regardless of the highs and lows, lovers of 60s, 70s, 80s dacoit curry westerns of Bollywood will appreciate this. I’m going with 3 out of 5 stars.
