Red notification wasn’t exactly a hit when it landed on Netflix last year, with many citing the Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot-led action comedy as an unimaginative and paint-by-number affair. Despite that, the film was a huge draw for the streamer, and immediately two sequels were greenlit to continue the adventures of Johnson’s FBI agent John Hartley, Reynolds’ thief Nolan Booth, and Gadot’s art thief Sarah Black/The Bishop. Now producers Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn have provided a positive update on where exactly the two sequels stand in terms of scripting.
Red notification was one of the many films that critics saw and a large number of ratings contradicted the huge ratings of the past two years. The crime hairdresser made headlines early on when it became one of the most expensive movies ever produced by Netflix, thanks largely to its hefty cast bill, but the film was seemingly enough of a financial win to get the green light for not just one. only two sequels. While speaking with Collider recently, Garcia and Flynn gave an encouraging update to anyone eagerly awaiting more from the franchise. Flynn said:
“Well, we have a ‘Red Notice 2’ script and almost… [Red Notice] 3. The plan is hopefully if Hiram and I are happy we would make those movies back to back. But it’s all about the scripts and how we feel and how Dwayne, Gal and Ryan feel about it. But that franchise is great and obviously Netflix really wants it, and Rawson [Marshall Thurber, director, and screenwriter] being committed.”
On the back of this Garcia added:
“Yes, Rawson (Marshall Thurber) is at work and we were talking to him about it recently. He’s deep in it and that’s his baby. So he was cut away. We are excited to step in and see a new concept that he will bring to us soon.”
Red notification Follow-up movies can be filmed back to back
Before the Covid pandemic, many movie sequels had plans to film back to back to shorten the time between subsequent releases. Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning movies have been one such example, but a combination of Covid restrictions and studios having to be careful with their finances has caused and other back-to-back plans to end with short delays between filming instead.
Now that Netflix has already pledged to make two more Red notification movies, it wouldn’t be surprising for the two to film together, especially given how busy the franchise’s three lead roles are. Dwayne Johnson is currently gearing up for the release of Black Adam and has a sequel to Jumanjic and Jungle Cruise in the pipeline, along with the Christmas movie Rode at Amazon. Ryan Reynolds has returned from his sabbatical and is throwing himself headlong into his Deadpool role at Marvel Studios. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot was recently part of the cast of Disney’s snow white remake and will soon reprise her role as Wonder Woman. With all that going on, it will be a task enough to get the three back together without stretching it over two shoots. Red notificationThe first sequel will most likely not be released until 2024, with a sequel a year later if everything goes according to plan and both films are shot together.
