Reservation Dogs have an indigenous leading role

Reservation Dogs has a cast in which each series is regularly native, as is every writer and director working on the series. The show with D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Devery Jacobs, Paulina Alexis and Lane Factor. Also seen in supporting roles are Elva Guerra, Sarah Podemski, Zahn McClarnon and Dallas Goldtooth.

“You can’t go to Hollywood to cast a show like this,” Harpo said of casting the series, via NPR. “[Native actors usually] every five to ten years to play with a dead Indian outside a teepee, you know? So there is not a large group of native actors in LA. So we went to the communities and shouted to Angelique Midthunder, who was our casting director. She went in and we went to different communities and we also got tapes from communities, but it was important that they were from an indigenous community.”

Harjo added: “It wasn’t unnecessarily unorthodox for me because I’ve been making these films for so long and I know there’s talent. There’s just no opportunity for Indigenous actors to know there’s an opportunity to be in a movie.”

Per FX, the half-hour comedy series follows the exploits of “four native teens in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob and rescue to the exotic, mysterious and distant land of California. Native creative team invites the audience into a surprising familiar and funny world.”

Reservation Dogs can be streamed on Hulu. Season 3 doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
