Human rights lawyer and trade unionist Sudha Bharadwaj recently spoke about actress Rhea Chakraborty who was arrested in 2020 and spent 28 days in judicial custody in Mumbai’s Byculla prison. Sudha, who was arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case, was released from prison in December last year after three years. She said Rhea had no air about her status, mingling with inmates and even performing for them before leaving prison.

“The stuff with Sushant Singh Rajput went on and on in the media, it was crazy. Back then, we used to say that Rhea is made a scapegoat. We were very unhappy with it. So I was very glad she wasn’t taken to the main station; she was held in the special cell. I think she was kept there so she wouldn’t see the TV because people would keep that TV on. Hearing about your case all the time would have been too disturbing for her,” Sudha told Newslaundry in a new interview.
She added: “I have to say for someone who was thrown into such a situation … for her as a young person she took it very sporty and she was so friendly with people. She was so friendly with the kids. The first day (they met her) everyone went ‘Rhea kahan hai (where’s Rhea)?’ You know how people are But she’d never make a thing of it And when she left she had some money left in her account so she asked for candy for everyone in the barracks and everyone came down to say hello Then everyone said: ‘Rhea, one dance, one dance.’ And she actually obliged. So sweet. She danced with them (the prisoners).”
Rhea Chakraborty was in a relationship with the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found dead in his Bandra apartment in Mumbai on June 14, 2020. Rhea was arrested by NCB on September 8 of the same year after drug-related charges were filed against her. . She was released on bail in October after spending nearly a month in Byculla prison.
