‘Riverdale’ actor Ryan Grantham gets life in prison for killing mother

Former “Riverdale” actor, Ryan Grantham, who pleaded guilty to murdering his mother, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison after 14 years with the potential to apply for parole.

The sentence, awarded by a Canadian judge, was automatic with his second-degree murder sentence, with only the length of the parole in question disqualifying.

The 24-year-old’s sentence was imposed by Justice Kathleen Kerr of the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver. Court proceedings were held in June to determine when Grantham should be eligible for parole.

The previous hearing made headlines when prosecutors said Grantham — whose credits include the 2010 film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and a 2019 episode of “Riverdale” — allegedly attempted to assassinate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Conspired in which he packed his vehicle. Guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails and a map of Trudeau’s family residence in Ottawa. He then reportedly stopped on the way and decided to hand himself over to the police.

On March 31, 2020, Grantham shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head as she played the piano in her Squamish townhouse. According to prosecutors, he had planned the murder in advance and rehearsed his actions while contemplating murder for about 15 minutes. Grantham – a veteran shooter – also filmed a four-minute video on a GoPro camera in which he confessed to the crime and showed his mother’s body, which was seen in court. He left for Trudeau’s cottage the day after the murder.

Meanwhile, the defense argued for taking into account Grantham’s mental state and admission of remorse, saying he had been expressing homicide and suicidal tendencies in the months leading up to the murder. In victim impact statements, Grantham’s sister Lisa and her aunt said they fear being released from prison, according to Complex,

Grantham’s last screen appearance was in a 2019 episode of “Riverdale.” He also had minor roles in “The Imagination of Doctor Parnassus,” “iZombie” and “Supernatural.”
