Ryan Eggold on how Max’s breakup presents a big chance for growth

When we last saw the men and women of “New Amsterdam,” Ryan Eggold’s character Max Goodwin was left on the roof of the hospital at the altar, where they were all in attendance.

“It was heartbreaking a season finale, and playing scenes with Freyma [Agyeman, who plays Helen]“That romance had, you know, some of my favorite scenes, and Freima is very talented,” Eggold said (Egman isn’t returning full-time for the final season). “And just to play and discover those scenes. was a pleasure. And I think for writing David and Peter, and finding that whole arc, I think we had such a great time with it.

“This season is going to be different in that regard,” Eggold continued. “And I am going to miss a lot playing those scenes. But I think when there is a dramatic change in one’s life, it leaves behind this huge opportunity to grow, to change, to learn, and that’s why I think Max is starting the year that way. Is.

But Agyeman, who is currently working on a new show for Hulu, might not be completely absent from the final season.

“I’ll tease [to] “We haven’t seen the last of Helen Sharp,” said series creator and executive producer David Schulner.

Dr. Bloom, like Max, was also involved in the end of a relationship (with Leila) in the Season 4 finale, although this was for his own liking and well-established reasons. Iggy (Tyler Lebin) also ended their relationship.

“to do that” [that]It was, in fact, a huge step. And I think Iggy too, I think he was really mature to do that. So I think all the characters are hopefully growing and moving forward,” Schulner said.

As for what’s next for Bloom and Iggy, Schulner said many questions remain.

“Who says Leela will happen this season too? There are going to be a lot of big changes in all the characters.”

“It’s one of the great things about heartbreak and devastation that it changes everything. I think it’s Nietzsche [who] said, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,'” said executive producer Peter Horton. “And that’s why they all have to take big steps in their lives.”

If you’ve been hearing that the subject matter of change this season, you’re right. The same is true for Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims).

“He’s gone from classical to jazz,” said Horton, borrowing a metaphor. “He’s trying to figure out who he is in life without all the shackles of his upbringing and his preconditions.”

“New Amsterdam” returns Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
