Scarlet Witch movie announcement (again) for D23

Another long-running and persistent rumor has emerged, like an enemy you thought was vanquished, but keeps coming back instead. Once again, rumors are circulating that a solo Scarlet Witch movie will be announced, this time at D23.

The D23 Expo, the annual Disney-run and exclusive Disney convention, will take place from September 9, 2022 to September 11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Southern California. Billed as “The Ultimate Disney Fan Event”, the D23 Expo 2022 will be presented by Visa. Tickets are available to purchase for D23 members only, but becoming a general member is free as opposed to an upgrade to the additional benefits associated with a Gold membership. However, all tickets for the 2022 event are sold out.

Usually, the D23 event is accompanied by multiple announcements about Disney’s various properties. This, of course, includes the movies and streaming shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe produced by the Disney-owned Marvel Studios. However, after so many of the anticipated announcements regarding the MCU took place at Hall H on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con 2022, there has been much speculation about what could be revealed at D23 2022.

Wanda, Wanda

It’s no surprise that these rumors quickly point to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), perhaps better known by her darkholdprophesied name, the Scarlet Witch. Even before she played a vital role in the recent film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessTwitter was buzzing with rumors of a Wanda solo film, or even a Wanda solo trilogy.

In Multiverse of madnessWanda played an antagonistic role for the eponymous Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for much of the film’s duration. Damaged by the caustic dark magic of the darkholdobtained during the Disney+ streaming series WandaVisionthe movie saw the Scarlet Witch attempt to use America Chavez’s (Xochitl Gomez) abilities to access a dimension where her children Billy (Jullian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) existed.

However, at the end of the film, America was able to give Wanda the perspective to realize what she had become in pursuit of her goal. This caused the Scarlet Witch to pull a magical castle over itself. While this may be a sure sign of fatality in some stories, in the Marvel universe it’s just another Wednesday and the character most likely survived.

Will her next appearance be in her own solo film?
