‘She-Hulk’ director says Marvel was nervous about show’s ‘glyful horniness’ over self-parody (VIDEO)

Thanks to “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” we now know two things for sure: Captain America foooooo-es, and She-Hulk smashes (Matt Murdock). And while Kevin Feige may have been ready and ready to reveal the first of those things, She-Hulk’s sex life was a bit more taboo for Marvel. But, according to the women involved, it was always going to be in the limelight in some way or the other.

Marvel fans have long lamented the fact that despite having an entire universe full of adults, the MCU rarely, if ever, shows those adults having sex. Many were excited for the prospect of that changing with last year’s “Eternal.” But, when Cersei and Ikaris’s moment came, it was very PG and very short-lived.

Now, we have “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” streaming in full on Disney+. And in this series, Jennifer Walters is not only a sex life, but also an active sex life. And for series star Tatiana Maslany, it was one of the most exciting things about the character.

“I love it. I mean, Jessica Gao and me and Ginger [Gonzaga]”We all talk about how charming this show is,” Maslany told TheWrap. “That’s what we love most about it, it’s kind of gleeful horn. You know, who just doesn’t feel like the kind of revered superhero. And it’s really like, I don’t know. It’s like, dizziness, it’s feminine, it’s about desire. it’s whatever!”

According to lead writer and executive producer Jessica Gao, Jane’s sex life was essential to the exploration of the character’s “total breadth”. As director Kat Coiro recalls it, there was a lot of conversation with high level people about how it would actually be portrayed. And within those conversations, there was certainly some nervousness from Marvel — even more so about the idea of making themselves part of the fun of the finale.

“It was definitely a part of our conversation, because you can’t make up a story about a woman in her 30s navigating modern life and not addressing sex,” Coiro told TheWrap. told. “And I think the media is weirdly more prudent when it comes to female attitudes regarding sex. And, you know, we’ve had Iron Man a lot, but then all these conversations happened and Marvel There was a lot more to fear about her sex life than to make fun of her. But we just kept saying, this is her story, and this is her truth, and we’ll handle it in a way that’s mild.

In the end, the pieces broke together when the “She-Hulk” team learned that they would be allowed to cast Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, on the show.

“You know, we wanted to show her dating and then when we were told we could use Daredevil, immediately we were like, oh, we gotta get them — like, you two of those guys together. Get it, they are definitely doing it,” Gao told TheWrap with a laugh. “And it was just such an amazing bonus that they had this incredible, explosive chemistry. Like when you look at that bar scene with them, you’re like, ‘Oh my god. These guys should get a room.’ And then they do!”

Indeed, by the end of Daredevil’s first appearance in Episode 8, he and Jane happily fall into bed together. And framing that particular scene was key to Koiro, who attempted to bring the old and the new closer together.

“I never wanted to get too carried away with sex, but I also don’t want sex to be taboo, even for young people. And so it was always finding that balance,” Coiro said. Said. “And I think the tongue-in-cheek element is really important. Like, when Jane and Daredevil [get together], I like to end it on that little pan on top of their costume. It was a tribute of sorts to rom com tropes of the 2000s, but also something completely new as it was a baton and helmet instead of clothing. And it’s, it’s very suggestive, but it’s also, you know, accessible to all ages, which I love.”

The next morning, the audience learns from Jane that their encounter had come to “a very satisfying conclusion”, and in the finale, she jokes even more about her desire for Daredevil. After literally breaking the fourth wall and making her way to Marvel Studios to complain about Kevin’s finale, Jane also requests to see Daredevil one more time in the finale. Because, “a woman has needs.”

When Kevin scolds her for exiting his show and ruining the ending she designed for him, she has no regrets — but she has another sex joke. She explains that smashing is what the Hulks do; Bruce Banner breaks down buildings, and “I break down fourth walls and bad endings. And sometimes Matt Murdock.”

The joke quickly became a fan favorite, and one Tatiana Maslany enjoyed as much.

“In that moment, Jane owns many parts of her story and owns this throughline of her story,” Maslany said. “So there’s something about him, that’s so convincing with all of this, that’s really cool.”
