Smile holds number 1 in Box Office as Amsterdam Tanks

Horror dominates the month of October. After last weekend debuted in first place, the new movie from Paramount Smile retained its No. 1 spot for the second week in a row. The film is expected to earn $17.6 million with a drop of just 22%, which is a particularly notable achievement for horror films. Smile has now earned nearly $90 million worldwide.

Smile also managed to top two new releases, featuring Sony’s family comedy Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile bringing in $11.5 million with its debut in domestic theaters. Per THRThe film was expected to win the weekend, although Sony reportedly still expects it to perform well on Monday’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day to earn about $13.4 million.

David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, meanwhile, falls far short of its targets. Despite a star-studded cast that included names like Margot Robbie, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Christian Bale, the film just didn’t get an audience pouring in, raking in about $6.5 million at the box office. That’s not good if the budget was $80 million, making Amsterdam a cash register bomb.

After Amsterdamthe Viola Davis movie The woman king landed in the #4 spot with $6.5 million, while Olivia Wilde’s Don’t worry baby dropped to number 5 at $5.3 million. A reissue of Avatar also did well raising $2.6 million to add to the proceeds from its current run; it comes in at number 6.

the romcom brothers was down 56% with revenue of $2.15 million. Since the film will be starring entirely made up of LGBTQ+ actors, star and co-writer Eichner suggested that homophobia could be the cause when the film fell short on its opening weekend. Even with strong reviews and Universal’s hopes that word of mouth would get more people to see the film this month, it looks more like the movie’s theatrical release will be a dud.
