Colin Jost kicked off Weekend Update with a couple of Oscar hats, including one referencing John Travolta and how he screwed up Idina Menzel’s name at the 2014 Academy Awards.
First he pitched what looked like a joke about Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis as their pictures flashed on screen. “Bitter rivals who have been desperately begging for votes and trying to impose their policies on America will finally face one another in person. Of course I’m talking about tomorrow’s Oscars,” Jost began. “The Film Academy has denied a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to perform at the Oscars, but they have promised that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be as John Travolta voices Viola Davis.”
“The Oscars organizers say they changed the color of the arrivals carpet from red to champagne so the mood would be milder,” continued Jost. “But I don’t know, going from red to champagne usually makes me a full-fledged slut.”
Michael Che then addressed President Biden’s proposed budget and how $400 million will be allocated to combat Chinese disinformation. “It would target the number one source of Chinese disinformation, fortune cookies.”
Jost then followed up on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, who “released security footage of the January 6 attacks with the violence edited out and said it proved it was a peaceful gathering. It’s like cutting all the sex out of a porn video and saying it’s a short film about life as a stepmom.”
Next up: a crack from Che on the Duchess of Sussex. “It’s been reported that the organizers of King Charles’ coronation have officially invited Meghan Markle, and that’s nice, with a starting salary of $19.”
