Anniversary now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The series is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Part 1 released on April 7th and Part 2 of the series will be streaming from April 14th. Jubilee tells the story of the pre- and post-independence era and its impact on the film industry at the time. At the time, when studios ruled, the country was trying to choose between Soviet or American political ideology, and its impact was inevitable on the kind of movies and music being made. Jubilee follows the journey of a studio owner and his wife Srikant Roy-Sumitra Devi, Binod Das who is desperate for a way to go from behind the scenes to acting, Jay Khanna who had a thriving theater in Karachi but it has lost all because of the partition and is now trying to gain a foothold in the Hindi film industry. Madan Kumar plays an important role in all this as he has become a sensation right after his first film and everyone wants to bond with him and redeem his name. But what happens when Madan Kumar’s true identity is revealed? What if the world that worships him learns how he became Madan and that he has blood on his hands? Will Jay Khanna still be as interested as making a movie with Madan Kumar once he finds out what happened to his dear friend Jamshed Khan – the original Madan Kumar? So part 2 is about to come out in a few days and here’s to get you started with part 1 of Jubilee.

What’s Hot:
Many movies and series have been made around the theme of partition. What’s so new about Jubilee? The uniqueness of Jubilee lies in the way it uses partition as a backdrop to tell the story of the Hindi film industry, of ambition, loss, egos and emotions. It’s its treatment of the world of showbiz in all its glory and ugliness that makes it an interesting watch. The casting is perfect and Vikramaditya Motwane certainly knows how to get the best out of his actors. Special mention to Aparshakti Khurana and Nandish Sandhu, who played their part and delivered an understated performance with such finesse. Wamiqa is a joy to watch. She is equal parts strong and shaatir, fragile and lively. The songs, though few, perfectly added to complement the emotions and atmosphere of the different songs, are melodic and true to the melody of yesteryear. They stay with you, even after you’ve seen the series. The story is intriguing and while there are several issues running in parallel, each story and character is given enough space on screen to strike a chord.
What not:
It’s a common complaint I have with filmmakers who make movies or series from a different era. More often than not, while creators stay true to the era in their look, feel, dialogues, costumes, they forget about the audience they’re making it for. The same is unfortunately the case with Jubilee. The treatment of the film, the manner and speed at which the story progresses are all according to the sensibilities of the black and white era films, too slow to suit the tastes of today’s junta. And even with that, it’s not consistent and suddenly turns into bits and pieces quickly in certain scenes. What could have been a 3 episode run of part 1 is stretched to 5.
BL verdict:
Watch Jubilee for the great performances and to relive times gone by in a story that is entertaining and intriguing at the same time. The fact that the ending of Part 1 leaves you curious about what happens next in the lives of Jay Khanna and Madan Kumar is proof enough that the series is worth watching. Jubilee Part 2 releases on Amazon Prime Video on April 14, so it’s time you caught up on the Part 1 episodes.
