Succession producer slams King Charles in Emmy speech

Another Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for “Succession,” another opportunity for “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong to express his displeasure with a major world leader.

Accepting the award for the show, Armstrong quipped that in reference to the passing of longtime British ruler Queen Elizabeth II and the subsequent promotion of her eldest son, now known as King Charles III, It’s been a big week for the successors.

“The new king in the UK. This, to us, obviously involves a little more turnout in our win than Prince Charles,” the British producer said of the “Succession” Emmy win.

In response, Scottish actor Brian Cox playfully advised Armstrong, “Keep it royalist, keep it royalist!” With regard to the monarchy, but its owner will not be affected.

“I’m not saying we’re any more legitimate than he is in our position,” Armstrong said. “We’ll leave it to other people.”

When the second season of “Succession” won an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2020 amid the ongoing pandemic, Armstrong took the time out of his acceptance speech to offer “un-thanks” to some of the most deserving parties involved in fighting the virus. also includes. himself, as well as then-President Donald Trump for his “strange and disorganized response” and further, then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his equally incompetent response to the global health crisis.

But Armstrong didn’t stop there, with “un-thankful” nationalist and quasi-nationalist governments and media moguls around the world working overtime to keep him in power.

Looking back, it doesn’t seem surprising that the creator of the most acidic, satirical series currently airing on TV might have a thing or two to say about powerful institutions that have the best interests of the little ones at heart. Can’t be.

It is not surprising, in the least, that his views are on a literal line of succession.
