The hunger Games made it clear from the start that this was going to be a series of dangerous and unexpected twists. The ride begins from the moment Katniss volunteers in her younger sister’s place. While The hunger Games was one of the most successful dystopian future franchises, that doesn’t mean it lacked mystery either. The hunger Games partially relied on surprise factors in the Arena to keep things interesting, exciting and unpredictable. Katniss gets genuinely scared when she thinks the Capitol tortured her family to hear their screams. She is shocked to see Rue’s eyes looking at her from Capitol-made rabid dogs.
However, some plot twists change the course of the story. Peeta could have been just any member of District 12. Instead, not only does Katniss know him, Peeta plays an integral role in keeping her family from starving when they urgently need food. During his interview, Peeta confesses his love for Katniss. This choice ended up causing one of the major shifts in the story, as their lives became intertwined from then until the end.
10 The backstory of Katniss and Peeta
As if it wasn’t bad enough that Katniss had to volunteer for the Hunger Games to save Prim, things get more complicated when Katniss learns that the other District 12 Tribute is Peeta Mellark. Given that her main goal was to rescue Prim from the Arena and return home, Katniss must face the possibility of killing the boy who had saved her family’s life from starvation.
While Katniss has no interest in sacrificing herself for Peeta, it makes him a little harder to kill, and the idea that they were tied together for a life-saving act lends more depth to their history.
9 Peeta’s confession of love
Instead of trying to protect himself, Peeta makes a grand claim that shocks the audience and Katniss when he admits his love for her on a live national broadcast. Peeta’s statement is a way to earn Katniss extra protection and present her as desirable, if Katniss hadn’t already won over the public. However, Peeta’s confession changes the course of their lives, especially when they are forced to play on camera in the Arena in order to survive, and how their lives become intertwined even in private moments.
8 Teasing a baby
Returning to the Hunger Games again for the Quarter Quell is everyone’s nightmare. To try and prevent a return to the Arena, Peeta takes a huge swing that could at least save Katniss if Peeta could get enough sympathy and anger. Claiming that Katniss is pregnant with their child and about to enter the Arena wasn’t what anyone expected, but unfortunately Peeta couldn’t get enough support.
7 Two victors
Since every previous Hunger Games only allowed one Tribute to leave alive, the decision to let Katniss and Peeta walk out of the Arena as District Twelve’s Victors came as quite a shock and acted as a partial catalyst for the continued growth of the Rebellion. Katniss and Peeta’s decision to threaten mutual suicide based on Peeta’s confession of love and playing in front of the cameras allows the duo to become the first duo to survive the Arena, and nothing is ever the same again.
6 The revolt
The scale and reality of the secretly growing uprising is a game changer for Katniss. You don’t feel like that anymore Katniss fights President Snow aloneand even if there had been rumors of rising rebels, it is a great relief to know that a real rebellion and revolution is growing.
Knowing it extends to the Arena, including ally Finnick, is helpful to have trusted friends in her inner circle. Gale’s involvement also puts a friendly face on Katniss, even though her attention is divided between her desire for change and her concern for Peeta.
5 District 13 exists
District 13 was meant to be destroyed years earlier. While some had hoped otherwise, there was never any hard-core evidence that it was still active. When Katniss finally learns the truth after being removed from the Quarter Quell, it reveals several new secrets. The existence of District 13 means new allies, skills and revealed secrets about the Capitol. Unfortunately, it also means new enemies as Katniss realizes that even a revolutionary leader can be a problem she faces.
4 Brainwashed Peeta
When Katniss and Peeta get divorced at the end The Hunger Games: Catching fire, what it means for Peeta is not entirely clear. Katniss is safe with friends and allies, but how will the Capitol use Peeta? mockingjay reveals that Peeta has been mentally, physically and emotionally damaged when everyone realizes that the Capitol has brainwashed him to hate Katniss.
It had always been clear that Peeta loved and cared about Katniss before, and even as she battled with herself about how she felt about him, she knew he would never act so horribly towards her if Peeta had been in his right mind . Peeta’s brainwashing affects his personality and memories to the point where he has to grow to understand the truth about his life.
3 Prim dies anyway
The tragic irony of the series is that although the story opens with Katniss sacrificing herself for Prim, the younger girl still dies in battle. Prim’s death is a painful tragedy and a reminder of the losses and struggles of war and strategy. Discover that Prim had been killed because of Gale’s war plan only made the situation worse, given how much Katniss trusted him.
2 Katniss kills coin
The idea of Katniss killing President Snow seemed inevitable from the moment they were pressed against each other in person. Katniss was the face of the revolution against President Snow’s corrupt administration. But when Katniss is able to take his life and finish it all off, she decides to end President Coin’s life instead. Snow was already dying and Katniss would not ensure his death until an earlier date.
However, President Coin represented an equally problematic New World Order, and Katniss chose to end further tragedies before they could begin.
1 Quarter suppression
Perhaps one of the most gruesome plot twists was the discovery that Katniss and Peeta had to return to the Arena. The decision to turn the 75th anniversary of the Hunger Games into a contest against former victors shakes all past winners. Peeta and Katniss knew they should stay in the public eye, as much as they may have hated it, but their continued involvement in the Hunger Games was meant to be a mentor, not an homage.
Forcing the duo and all the other former competitors into the Arena meant a new series of competitions far more dangerous than any other year.
