The president of the Hollywood Critics Association resigns due to a “hostile, biased and dismissive” work environment

Entertainment journalist Nikki Fowler, who had served as president of the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) during a challenging period for the organization, resigned from both her position and the group responsible for producing the HCA Awards due to an attitude ” hostile and biased. and dismissive” work environment.

in a note first obtained by The Hollywood ReporterFowler wrote to the HCA board stating that, “for my own good, I am retiring.”

Read Fowler’s memo to members below:

Dear All,
Sorry for the late time because I am in France time.
I have accepted my resignation as President and as a member of HCA due to what I sometimes consider, in my opinion, a hostile, biased and dismissive executive work environment that is not aligned with the original duties offered when I was elected President last year. As a woman in leadership, I tried to help the organization on many variables and many were fired, including asking for proper training from last year, committees, heading up sales, bias training, and harassment accountability. For my own well-being, I retire.
This will not take away from the lovely people I have met in this organization.
Wishing you all the best.
Greetings,
nikki hunter

Last year, several members of the Hollywood Critics Association, including Clayton Davis, Variety’s senior awards editor, and two other journalists from the publication, resigned from the organization. The decision came after a critic who had raised concerns about HCA’s finances, fundraising distribution and operations was ousted and subsequently went public with her grievances.

The controversy has resulted in a split both within and without the Hollywood Critics Association, which was established in 2016 as an offshoot of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society. With over 100 members, the organization was initially created to provide a platform for bloggers, YouTubers, and other multimedia journalists not associated with the mainstream media. As a result, the group is naturally more diverse than traditional critic circles.
