The View Hosts Clash Over Crime Rates in New York City

Things got a little tense at the “The View” table on Wednesday, as the hosts clashed with each other discussing crime in the country. During the discussion, host Joy Behar scolded Alyssa Farah Griffin for “exaggerating” the city’s level of insecurity.

The topic came to the fore as women considered Tuesday a debate between New York gubernatorial candidate Kathy Hochul and Lee Zeldin. During the debate, Zeldin argued that Hochul focused too much on gun crime, and was not addressing the violent incidents taking place in the city. But moderator Whoopi Goldberg argued that “crime is everywhere, it’s happening everywhere” and cited data indicating that murder rates are actually higher in Republican states.

She said what she really wanted from Zeldin was a solid plan to address and handle it.

“What’s your plan for Lee Zeldin? Because, we know people are getting stabbed, we know what’s going on,” said Whoopi. “We know what’s going on. What to do you plan to do?”

As the discussion continued, host Sunny Hostin chimed in, saying that, it seems, the massive plan for the Republican Party is just “intimidating.” But conservative host Alyssa Farah Griffin took some issue with it, saying that Republicans who are campaigning on the promise of giving more money to law enforcement are just “reacting to Democrats defaming the police.”

When Hostin pushed himself back, saying that “New York is one of the safest cities in the country,” Farrah Griffin was skeptical, and from there, the hosts began to riot.

“Although you think so? I don’t feel safe in New York,” Farah Griffin said of Hostin. “I live in the city, I don’t feel safe in New York.”

To that, Behr tells Farrah Griffin that she is not fully aware of how bad crime used to be before she was born in the city. “You are too young. You are,” said Behar. “You are 32 years old, aren’t you? You know, I’ve been around, and the crime rate was worse in the 80s and 70s. Sometimes I was afraid to leave my house.”

When Farrah Griffin questions that logic by saying “we shouldn’t settle” for minor fixes, Behar, a little disappointed, scolded her for how she represented the circumstances.

“No, I’m not settling for it, but don’t exaggerate the situation!” he said.
