The View sparks criticism by dressing kid as Will Smith’s Oscars Slap

The view may have pushed it in the opinion of many viewers who watched the daytime talk show on Halloween. In honor of the haunted holiday, the program’s presenters presented a segment featuring children dressed as costumes representing some of the biggest headlines of the year. Some ideas included costumes for the Mar-a-Lago robbery, the Choco Taco shutdown, Dr. Oz who bought vegetables and the leaked footage of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling from the set of the Barbie movie.

But it was the costume finally shown that drew some criticism from viewers. After mentioning the infamous incident that happened at the Academy Awards when… Will Smith punched Chris Rock, a kid was brought in dressed in gold to look like an Oscar. A red handprint was also applied to the child’s face to represent the slap in the face that Smith had given Rock. Perhaps they predicted that there would be some complaints about the costume as it was made clear that they don’t approve of what happened.

“Now we don’t want to condone violence of any kind, but we couldn’t resist talking about one of the hottest topics of this year,” wardrobe supervisor Ashley Alderfer-Kaufman said when presenting the costume. “So, we have our interpretation. We have an Oscars image, we call this the Oscars clap.”

Is an Oscars Slap Costume Inappropriate?

The “Oscars Slap” costume was not funny according to some viewers who posted about the segment on social media. One person commented on Twitter: “Hard to keep track of everything except the red handprint on someone’s face is the symbol for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. Too bad no one was able to flag this costume idea in advance.”

“Spotting the Oscar Slap for a hot topic for Halloween? Just pass this suggestion next time! Other than that, great Halloween costumes!” read another tweet.

“Bad taste on the Oscar blow,” another viewer wrote in a series of tweets, dismissing the idea that the blow isn’t supported by the costume. “You confirmed violence Ashly. Of course you would celebrate black on black violence. Great job Ashley. There were many hot topics and a violent one was your only choice Ashley.. Wow thank god you didn’t pick the other heinous crimes against black Americans. “

As a result of the Oscar incident, Will Smith has been banned from Academy events for the next decade. He also resigned from the Academy. The actor openly apologized to Chris Rock in a video posted online, although the two have not yet met in person and discussed the situation. However, Rock has joked about it in his stand-up act.
