The Way of Water wins the Oscar for Best Visual Effects

Director James Cameron’s long-awaited box-office dominating sci-fi sequel, Avatar: the way of the water, wins the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 95th Academy Awards. After waiting more than a decade for follow-up, Avatar: the way of the water was nominated for a total of four Oscars, including Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Picture in addition to Best Visual Effects.


More than a decade after the events of the first film, the first of several avatar sequels introduces audiences to the new family of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). Avatar: the way of the water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the troubles that haunt them, the effort they make to keep each other safe, the struggles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

While the plot of Avatar: the way of the water was criticized by some for its simplicity, but there was no criticism for its visual effects which, like its predecessor, are nothing short of awe-inspiring. After developing new performance shooting technology to film underwater scenes, the effort was made to Avatar: the way of the water to life is all there on the screen. Blurring the line between what’s real and CGI, Avatar: the way of the water succeeds in the daunting task of making you forget you’re looking at a computer-generated image.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: the way of the water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao and Matt Gerald, each reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning as a new character. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Brendan Cowell.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of several sequels

Avatar: the way of the water is now the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the third highest-grossing film of all time. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that Avatar: the way of the water is just the first of several planned sequels in the Avatar saga. There are now three more sequels with release dates, and the multiple follow-ups are scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.

While the details of the third appearance remain largely under wraps, Cameron has revealed that avatar3 will introduce more Na’vi tribes, including a vicious fire tribe known as the Ash People. “I want to reveal the Na’vi from a different angle because [so far] I only showed their good sides,” Cameron revealed. “In the early movies, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In ‘Avatar 3’ we’re doing the opposite.” In addition to the Ash People, Cameron also revealed that Avatar 3 will include “the Windtraders” and “desert people… that trade, that travel around [Pandora].”

Avatar: the way of the water will be released on VOD on March 28.
