For better or for worse, The Witcher will continue at Netflix after the loss of its protagonist. It was recently announced that the show had been renewed for season 4 ahead of next year’s season 3, but the news of the early renewal also came with a big bombshell. After playing Geralt of Rivia for three seasons, Henry Cavill leave the series while Liam Hemsworth has been brought in to replace him in the role.
Big recasts like this rarely go down well with the fans. Many feel that Cavill is too perfect as Geralt that no other actor will feel good as the character, especially after three seasons. With one viral tweet, one person suggests that Cavill has run away from the series. Cavill may be too busy for The Witcher contemplating his return as Superman in the DCU, but this fan isn’t so sure that’s the case.
The tweet reads: “Henry Cavill is leaving the Witcher after begging netflix for the part and being the franchise’s biggest fan makes the report that the writers hate the books more and more plausible. They chased that man out of the series. this is sick.”
“Henry Cavill knew too much about the source material for the… witcher so Netflix got rid of it,” said another popular tweet.
Another Twitter user uses a clip from Breaking Bad of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) who collapses while his wife (Anna Gunn) begs him to just listen to her. The tweet describes the clip as: “Netflix is trying to witcher fan base that Liam Hemsworth is a good replacement for Henry Cavill.”
“Be a fan of the witcher Netflix is scary because you can’t possibly think it can get any worse and then it happens,” another fan complains.
Meanwhile, some people choose to have fun with the whole thing. Digital artist BossLogic has featured some of Cavill’s artwork in various shows, imagining how he might appear in a series like House of the Dragon or a Mass effect now film his schedule which is more open.
The Witcher moves forward with Liam Hemsworth
It’s clear that many fans aren’t thrilled with Liam Hemsworth’s entry The Witcher, but others are curious how this ends. Hemsworth posted a statement about joining the show to Instagram and the post has been liked nearly 600,000 times at the time of writing. The actor also expressed his excitement at being cast as Geralt, as he is a big one witcher fan.
“Like a witcher fan, I am overjoyed at the chance to play Geralt of Rivia,” he said. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I am honored that he is handing me the reins and allowing me to pick up the White Wolf’s swords for the next chapter of his adventure.”
Hemsworth added: “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill but I’m really excited to enter the world of The Witcher .
The third season of The Witcher, featuring our final season of Cavill as Geralt, is expected to hit Netflix in the summer of 2023. Season 4 doesn’t have a release window yet. The first two seasons are available on Netflix. Check out some more fan reactions to the news below.
