Trevor Noah jokes about Kari Lake’s switch from Dem to Republican

Trevor Noah took aim at Arizona’s gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake on Tuesday night, making him the main character of his “fringe-watching” segment. And while she had a list of problems with a candidate refusing the election, her biggest one was the fact that she used to be very liberal.

Currently, Lake is in a close race for governor with Democrat Katie Hobbs. Lake has been supportive of impeaching former President Donald Trump twice, and repeatedly amplified proven lies about the 2020 election. But Noah wanted to tell the audience about Lake’s political beliefs—including the fact that she was a donor to Barack Obama’s campaign.

“If you’re only following him this election, you might think he’s your standard right-wing Republican. You know MAGA, hang up Mike Pence, normal stuff,” joked Noah. What makes Kari Lake’s story fascinating is not who she is, but who she was.”

Noah then pulled footage from MSNBC, which took a deep dive into Lake’s past, and noted that “his friends described him as liberal,” and that he was slowly seduced by Trump as he found her “funny.” . The report also pointed out that, although she is now vocally opposed to the drag queen, she was actually good friends with one for over two decades.

Given all this, Noah actually had a conspiracy theory of his own regarding Lake.

“I’ve heard of people being open to change, but it’s not nearly the same person. Like, I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out that the real Kari Lake is locked up in a dungeon somewhere while this maga alien pretends to be her. Shows off,” joked Noah. “Because it’s a bigger change than the drag queens she suddenly hates.”

The “Daily Show” host said that Lake turned her to a friend, a drag queen, who is “especially sh-t”, noting that Lake probably learned a lot from him.

“Turning on any friend is already terrible, but betraying the person who taught you how to get your outline or point? It’s unforgivable,” Noah joked.
