Ichadhari naagin toh sunna hoga but yeh ichadhari Bhediya kya hai? Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Deepak Dobriyal, Abhishek Banerjee starrer Bhediya is your answer. Bollywood has done its best to make something substantial, crossing boundaries and adapting to the levels of other industries. Bhediya is an attempt to live up to the audience’s expectations of suspense and drama gone. Directed by Amar Kaushik, Bhediya is the third installment in Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy series that started with Stree. The second was Roohi starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. However, unlike the first two, Bhediya cannot be called a horror film. Rather, it is a creature movie with the tadka of Bollywood. Is Bhediya worth seeing? Scroll on to know.

What is it about?

Bhediya revolves around a contractor named Bhaskar who is quite ambitious in life. Harriparti (money) is all he can think about and he is willing to do anything to make money. He has been given a contract to take charge of a road to be built from a forest. He travels to the beautiful location of Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, where he has to get the locals and tribes on board to participate in the construction of the road. Trees must be cut down, jungle must be cleared, wildlife must be hindered from his ambition. His cousin JD and a friend Jomin join him on this mission. He did not know that Prakriti (nature) has its own way of creating balance in the world.

What’s hot?

Bhediya is a perfect combination of comedy and drama. Varun Dhawan has made a genuine effort to experiment and try something new while keeping his comedic timing intact. He’s managed to get the feel right and pour it out on screen. The film’s scriptwriters did a great job when it comes to one-liners and punch lines. There are times when you roll on the floor laughing. The references to trending phrases like Shehnaaz Gill’s – ‘Meri koi feeling nahi hai kya, toh kya karun mein, marjaun?’ are finely processed. A wolf reacting to Himesh Reshammiya’s Tera Suroor while in boxers on a full moon night is absolutely hilarious. Kriti Sanon plays the role of a veterinarian who adds the charm and elegance the film deserves. Abhishek Bannerjee is the heart of the movie. His comedic timing and acting talent make Bhediya a downright fun and entertaining film. He captivates the screen like no other.

There are quite a few elements in the film that deserve attention. First of all, the scenic beauty of Arunachal Pradesh is captivating. Since the film is in 3D, you get the feeling of being in the middle of serene nature. Sometimes you feel like you’re in BBC Earth with close-ups of wildlife and it’s beautiful. The VFX of the movie is commendable. Varun Dhawan’s transition from human to wolf is tastefully done. Most of all, apart from the comedy and drama, Bhediya delivers strong social messages in the most subtle way possible and that hits the right nerve. Since the film was shot in Arunachal Pradesh, the makers have tried to keep intact the idiosyncrasies of the state, its culture and more by opting for the supporting characters to go with it and see their roles. There’s a surprise two-star cameo at the end that literally makes you jump out of your seat. We won’t reveal the names to avoid spoilers.

What not?

The first half of the movie progresses at a slow pace and seems a bit stretched in a few scenes. In the second half, however, the drama starts and then it is pure entertainment. I wish there were more scenes for Kriti Sanon to showcase her talent as the actress has made significant strides in her acting career since her debut film. But she does leave a trail, even though she has less screen time. The ending, while unexpected, is quite predictable. The songs didn’t do the movie justice and the background music kept reminding me of Stranger Things.

Verdict

Bhediya is a one-time viewing movie, but only if you watch in 3D. BollywoodLife gives Bhediya 3 stars.
