Velma Is Officially A Lesbian In New Scooby-Doo Movie

After decades of fan speculation, Velma is officially a lesbian.


New clips of the new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! in which the brain of Mystery Inc. swooning over costume designer Coco Diablo, has gone viral on social media as fans of the long-running franchise react to their suspicions being confirmed.

YouTuber Not even Emily shared one of the clips on Twitter, writing: “Velma is like me fr (lesbian).” Another user by the name of Reese shared sweet fan art of Velma and Coco, writing, “Velma is getting her lesbian debut after five decades, thanks.”

While this may be an official “coming out” for the Scooby Doo character, the case was made of glass – more than just fan theories, creators who have worked on several installments in the franchise have spoken out about their intentions to make Velma gay.

Among them is James Gunn, who wrote the 2002 live-action Scooby Doo and the sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, with Linda Cardellini as Velma. Gunn says that while the Mystery Inc. member started out as “explicitly gay” in his original script, the non-progressive studio pushed back bit by bit until Velma got a boyfriend.

“In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my original script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, getting ambiguous (the version recording), then nothing (the released version) and finally [Velma] have a boyfriend (the sequel),’ he tweeted in 2020.


Mystery Incorporated Producer Weighs On Velma’s Sexuality: ‘She’s Gay, Not Bi’

Tony Cervone, accompanying producer on the Mystery included animated series that ran from 2010 to 2013 is also adamant that Velma is gay and was written to be seen as such, despite dating Shaggy on the series.

“I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery included is not bi. She’s gay,” Cervone said in a post for Pride Month in 2020, leaving nothing to interpretation. “We were always going to make Velma a little weird and weird when she was dating Shaggy, because that relationship is wrong for me. her and she had an unspoken difficulty with the why.”

“There are hints as to why in that mermaid episode, and if you follow the whole Marcie arc, it seems obvious we could have made it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to settle on their feelings. respond during the main timeline, but after the reset they are a couple.”

He added: “You may not like it, but this was our intention.”
