Is Namor the villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

Director Ryan Coogler recently teased Namor’s arrival by calling the character a “dream antagonist.” The filmmaker put in a Empire interview that the stark contrast between Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and Tenoch Huerta’s Namor makes the latter perfect for the sequel.

“The contrast between T’Challa and Namor – their characters and their nations – jumps off the page. He’s a dream antagonist,” he said.

That said, Huerta doesn’t feel like his Namor is the villain of Black Panther 2. He told the publication that he sees Namor more as an antihero. That suggests there’s more to the character’s story that will be explored in the film, making him less of an outright villain, even if he’s going to serve as an enemy to the story’s heroes.

“Latin Americans are always the bad guys in Hollywood movies. And now we’re the heroes — or an anti-hero, in this case,” Huerta noted. “[Latin-Americans] make something to be proud of in Hollywood.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be released in US theaters on November 11, 2022.
