Marvel superhero Elizabeth Olsen paid tribute to real-life superhero Gail Abarbanel, the founder and director of Los Angeles-based The Rape Foundation and Stuart House — an organization that provides a place where children who are victims of sexual assault receive free medical, legal and psychological care.

According to Variety, in her speech at Variety’s Power of Women event, Olsen spoke passionately about Abarbanel, also in attendance, and the Los Angeles organization the activist founded nearly five decades ago. “When I heard about tonight, I asked Gail if she’d like to do anything else with the foundation because she’s already thought of everything in my mind. She said, ‘Yes, to stop sexual abuse on the Internet,’ she said.
“To me that sounded very, very grand and perhaps impossible. But if you asked her what she wanted to create in 1974, I think it would have sounded just as grand and impossible.” As the report notes, Abarbanel founded Stuart House after acknowledging how poor support networks for victims of sexual abuse were during her time as a social worker in Santa Monica.
“I’ve learned about all the ways Stuart House has managed to fill a need in a system that could otherwise be so damaging to child victims,” Olsen continued. “Without a program like Stuart House, it’s not unheard of for a child to go to as many as six different agencies to report their abuse and be interviewed by professionals without any training on working with children. At Stuart House, they provide internal police detectives, prosecutors, child advocates, therapists and forensic services to help expedite investigations and child protection actions.
Elizabeth Olsen also shared an example of a boy who has been with the foundation for three months and started early for a while because he liked going there. “I don’t say this lightly, but the kids who come to Stuart House love coming there… There is a 5 year old boy who has been with us for the past three months and he started coming early simply because he was our magnetic tiles,” Olsen said. “Ultimately, he has a positive association with the people and the place he’s being treated—a treatment that will ultimately be life-saving for his future. And his future is one of many that Gail has helped transform.”
