Wednesday Showrunners Hoping for Addams Family Spin-offs

Ahead of Wednesday’s premiere on Netflix, the showrunners are already teasing potential spin-offs that follow other Addams Family members.

Pop culture’s creepiest, craziest family is being reimagined for the Netflix series Wednesday. Directed in part by Tim Burton, the show was created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough who also serve as showrunners. The series centers on Wednesday Addams with Jenna Ortega in the lead role, although the other members of the family can be seen in supporting roles, such as Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzman as Gomez, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.

Wednesday might mainly focus on Wednesday Addams, but if the series is a hit for Netflix, we could see more of the other Addams adventures. During an interview for The Hollywood Reporter’s TV Top 5 podcast this week, Millar and Gough talked about the possibility of branching out after Wednesday has been released. As the two explain, they made Wednesday with the hopes that some of his characters would get spin-off shows, which is partly why they brought in such big names to play the other Addams family members.

“We’ve definitely talked about it and we’ve talked about it with Netflix. And again, when you create a world like this, one of these characters is supposed to star in their own show. Sure, it’s cast that Know you, when you have Fred Armisen, when you have Catherine Zeta-Jones, when you have Luis Guzman. So that’s definitely something we’ve discussed and we’d really like to successfully expand this world further just Wednesday.”

Will Fester’s Quest be a Wednesday spin-off?

Before Uncle Fester’s casting was announced, there was much speculation about who would play him, although Fred Armisen’s casting in the role was very well received. He appeared in a new trailer that also gave a first look at the original Wednesday Addams actress from the live-action films, Christina Ricci, in her special role on the series. Jenna Ortega admitted she was terrified of working with Ricci on her way to the shoot.

“I felt like I was really having a panic attack when I was told that,” Ricci told Empire Magazine. “I was terrified. She’s a really cool lady. I was happy to meet her, but the first time we did a scene together, and she had to see me do it like she was made up 30 years ago, it was nerve-wracking.”

The cast of Wednesday also Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Emma Myers, Percy Hynes White and Gwendoline Christie.

Wednesday premieres on Netflix on November 23, 2022.
