Wednesday Trailer Breakdown: Welcome to Nevermore Academy

Wednesday‘s official trailer dropped at New York Comic Con, which no doubt delighted some of its creepier servants. It’s an exciting one because of two big casting reveals. Christina Ricci plays Mrs. Thornhill, a teacher at the recently unveiled Nevermore Academy. And the infamous Uncle Fester is played by Fred Armisen. Everyone can’t wait to see these two roles work in the talented hands of Tim Burton when Netflix releases this highly anticipated series.

The Wednesday trailer takes us through Nevermore Academy and shows us exactly what challenges Wednesday may face at this haunted boarding school. While we can always expect some strange things from the Addams Family, Tim Burton doesn’t disappoint as he takes us through secret societies, hidden libraries and suspected murder in the hallways of this strange high school. It looks like the Addams Family lore will also be expanded a bit as well-known characters develop new powers and terrifying beasts from all over the myths and legends join the story in the new Netflix series. Wednesday Trailer Reveals Nevermore Academy

In the latest trailer, we saw a colorful, clichéd American high school attend Wednesday that looked like a parody of Riverdale. Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzman as Gomez, her parents were forced to deal with Wednesday’s misbehavior after she put piranhas in the pool to punish the jocks who hurt her brother. That’s how Wednesday ends at Nevermore Academy.

In this official trailer, we finally get a real look at Nevermore. The darkened high boarding school is somewhat like the Addams Family mansion, but with a few extra wings and a larger campus. We get to know exactly what is nevermore academy, “a safe place for our children,” as the narrator tells us. That is the voice of Gwendoline Christie, as she will be playing the principal of the school, Larissa Weems.

As the black limousine pulls through the wrought-iron gates, we’re told that Nevermore Academy might be a little more for college students than what we might find in a regular high school. Two students turn from their conversation to show us that they have no faces, and then another group of children starts howling loudly, showing us, as always, werewolves traveling in packs.

But aside from being a school for the odd and eccentric, Nevermore Academy is a boarding school. As our view goes through a door, we get a peek into Wednesday’s room, which appears to be a large attic at the top of the mansion, decorated with a huge colorful stained glass window. We’re also introduced to Wednesday’s roommate, Enid Sinclair, who seems as cheerful and colorful as the window. She asks Wednesday what’s going on. Her mom says Wednesday is allergic to color, and after Enid asks what’s happening to her, we get our first big Wednesday line of the series: “I break into hives and then the flesh peels off my bones.” Later we will notice that the giant window in their room is divided exactly in the middle. One half is clear and colorful, while the other remains colorless.

Uncle Fester, Christina Ricci and special forces

We learn a lot about what the school could be within a few frames of the trailer. We see fighting in a fencing match on Wednesday, an old callback to Gomez fencing at the Addams Family mansion. Wednesday is accosted by people dressed as pilgrims pinning an apple to a target in what must be an archery lesson. But as she narrowly dodges a falling gargoyle, we discover that this school may have more to offer than just its ordinary oddities.

Wednesday removed a bag from her head in a circle of hooded figures. She stands in front of a statue as it moves back into the wall, revealing a hidden passageway. And the shadow of a spiky, claw-fingered ghoul roams the schoolrooms at night.

Tim Burton already told us that while attending the school on Wednesday, mysterious psychic abilities will begin to develop. But it seems that some other characters from the well-known Addams Family will also be given new powers. As Wednesday draws her sword to stab a cloaked man who descends into the woods behind her, he catches the sword in his hands and sends an electric shock through the blade to disarm Wednesday. Then, as he takes off his hat, we see Fred Armisen’s friendly, bald head as Uncle Fester. He invites Wednesday for a ride on his Dalmatian-spotted motorcycle.

In the final scene of the trailer we have Christina Ricci introducing herself as Mrs Thornhill. Ricci famously played Wednesday Addams in the classic 90s movies. It will be a treat to see her interact with her old “self” in this new series.
