Werewolf at night contains a lot of blood because ‘no one said no’

Michael Giacchino brings something original to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Werewolf at night. The Disney+ Halloween special is heavily inspired by some of the classic horror movies that preceded it, including: Creature from the black lagoon and The Wolfman. The project’s official synopsis reads: “Follows a lycatrope superhero who fights evil using the abilities given to him by a curse inflicted by his bloodline.”

Werewolf at night will be released almost entirely in black and white; however, that’s not the only thing that sets it apart from other MCU projects. According to Giacchino, the Disney+ special will contain a lot more gore than most Marvel fans are used to. During an interview with IGNthe director spoke about the heavier use of blood and gore and its service in the project.

“Well, it was one of those things where nobody said no,” explains Giacchino. “I just kept pushing. I knew we would balance that with heart and humor and humanity and empathy and all that. And as long as we kept that balance in tow, I felt like we had some leeway to get on the horror side. ” Of course, the director, who also acts as a composer, Werewolf at night, said the extra blood was needed when handling samples. “And look, we’re dealing with monsters, monster movies, and I felt like we should enter that realm, but not be afraid of it. And if that meant, ‘Sorry, you have to do this,’ someone came my room. And if that meant trying some new things, we’d try some new things.”

Giacchino admits there was some hesitation around the Gore

Of course, the audience shouldn’t expect a bloodbath like a hard R-rated movie. However, Werewolf at night will likely give a more gruesome take on his characters than other MCU projects. Giacchino admits there was some hesitation about the decisions being made, but the director thinks they all benefit from the Halloween special.

“I think there was an air around the production of, ‘What’s going to happen? Are they going to let us do this while we come back with all these images that are so violent? What’s going to happen?’” he explains. “But I knew in my heart that what we were doing wasn’t sadistic. We weren’t making a movie that was just about random killing. I was about the people. And I feel like if you’re talking about the characters and the people, then you have some leeway to do other things that you normally wouldn’t.” He concludes by saying, “And being black and white didn’t hurt us either.”

Fans are prepared to freak out with Gael García Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant and Leonardo Lam leading Giacchino’s Disney+ special. Werewolf at night will be released this week via the streaming giant on October 7.
